Fungi (2)

Another of the fungi growing on the fallen tree, probably the same type. This one was about 8-10 across.

Aren't these incredible....if it was edible, it looks as if it would make a good meal!

I've written a blog, Gee, about these type of fungi and how we write on them in Canada. You might enjoy a read and try it for yourself if you find some more fungi.

A great picture Gee!

Looking more closely at your fungi, Gee, I'm wondering if it is the same type as we had in B.C. Our fungi aren't soft on the darkest side (they are slightly hard which means you can get them off the tree without breaking them).

Were the fungi you have in the photo soft on both the top and the underside?

I'll have to look into this a bit more and see if I'm leading folk on GOY astray...maybe there is a difference in fungi that are suitable for writing on.

~~~ I've found this link which looks very much like the fungi we used in B.C. to draw/print on ~~~
Sorry, Whistonlass, I didn't touch the fungi at all. I was juggling camera, Millie on end of dog lead and pooh bag (full!!) while taking the photos :) This one was like a dish shape.
Oh well...no worries, Gee. Next time you are out and about you can always see if you can remove a fungi and give it a try. I can understand you'd have a bit of difficulty juggling pooch, accessories (incl. bag) and camera without bending down to fetch a fungi! lol
The fungi you did see looks the right shape at least.
I've checked out your link, Whistonlass, and I don't think it is the same. I think mine is Birch bracket fungi (Pitptoporus betulinus) which only grows on birch trees. Some of the Google images looked exactly like my other bun shaped photo which is an immature speciman. Apparently this one has the texture of polystyrene but I will check it out next time I walk that way. Far too wet and slippery to go down that track at the moment :)
I'll look forward to hearing if you get back to give the fungi a try, Gee.
We did have birch trees in B.C. but I honestly don't know if the fungi grew only on those trees as there were so many varieties of tree, cedar, oak, alder...to name a few.
Don't go onto the slippery wood paths....not a great idea at all!
