That looks amazing. Wish I had a big veg plot like that! I'd never get any cleaning done at all though!!

thanks fr the lovely comments..but does anyone know when its time to harvest the spuds?
7 Jun, 2011
I am no expert, but I was always under the impression that spuds are ready to harvest once the top growth has flowered and is starting to die off.....any other ideas?

Its a bit of a strange one with the spud harvest Sandra, because not always do they flower! My Pentlan Javlins which were set in March and I am now harvesting have no flowers on them, sometimes the case with first early varieties. second earlies usually flower so you can harvest when the flowers have dropped off and main crop wait until the plants have died back a little. An old gardening gentleman once told me a rhyme it goes like this and often with vegetables is true.... 12 week from setting to getting! I've always remembered this and if you think about my tatties it's true.

Thanks Avid, that's useful info! I might grow some in sacks next year. My friend said she got a lovely crop in hers.

Sandra:
Wow! That's great! I haven't started my vegetable garden yet. I should have started it back in Jan or Feb., however, here in San Diego we have 365 day a year growing season...so I don't have to be too concerned. :>)

as we have to grow in the summer it makes it so exciting...not sure i would like an all year round summer...i love our seasons..

Sandra:
We have seasons also...they're just not so pronounced. lol! :>)

I love the seasons too, but I'd love to be able to grow all year round. Would give me more time in the garden, and maybe I'd be able to grow something more exotic. :o))
Karen, I grow all my spuds in Buckets and sacks, and they grow well. :o))

Lindalooloo:
Yes, it's pretty nice in the middle of winter when the temps get up to 80ºF/27ºC or warmer in the garden.
10 Jun, 2011
Mmmmm... Delonix, Don't know if I'd like it that warm all the time. No pleasing some. Lol. What is your coolest temp then?
10 Jun, 2011
my max is 24 degrees..then i have to run for cover....i love all the exotic plants though..
10 Jun, 2011
Lindalooloo:
The average winter high temps in January is: 68ºF/20ºC (where I live in San Diego) and the average low is: 48ºF/9ºC. Although temps can be much higher or sometimes a little cooler. However, the absolute minimum temps rarely, if ever fall below 40ºF/4.5ºC at night in winter. I live in a frost-free subtropical climate.

Sandra:
Is you max temps 24ºC/75ºF in summer?
We have low temps of 24ºC/75ºF in summer. lol! :>)
Of course the high temps average about 88ºF/31ºC. (it averages warmer further inland and cooler by the coast).
12 Jun, 2011
I could do 40/48 no problem. Could do 80 too. it's when it's up in the 100s I can't do. But subtropical, noooo problem, could live with that, me thinks. lol. Our stupid, changeable, miserable, wet, damp weather, just keeps getting worse, so subtropics sounds good to me at the moment, because as I make this comment, it is 2100hrs and it is still windy and pouring down, and has been all day. :o(

Lindaloolo:
We can get temps to more than 90ºF/32ºC in winter, during the day (especially when we have Santa Ana Wind Conditions).
We can get very hot conditions in late summer and fall...this is when we get those days above 100ºF/38ºC. I don't like when it's this hot either.
I hope your weather warms up and dries up soon!
13 Jun, 2011
we max at around 30 in the summer...very occasionally but most of us cant cope with it as we are not used to it...it is coming up to our mid summers day soon, and the other evening temps were down to 4....thats the british summer..lol

Sandra:
The low temps during the very early morning are 4ºC/40ºF in summer? Are you sure that's summer? If that the case, WOW, that's is so very, very COLD!!! I typically get two morning lows of maybe down to 4ºC/40ºF a year in mid-winter (It usually happens within the first two weeks of January).
The hi/lo temps for today was 77ºF/25ºC and 60º/16ºC and these temps are below normal. We've been having a cooler than normal spring due to the lingering effects of La Niña. Typically, this time of year it's much hotter.

Sun is shining today, hip, hip, hooray. Still a bit chilly though. Just checked thermometer outside and showing 13/14. As you say Sandra, we have Midsummers Day coming up soon, (in a weeks time), and we haven't really tasted summer yet. :o)
