Giant Puffball

I found this on a walk through the fields around Sherston. I took it to the pub and asked them to cook it for us! It led to many an interesting conversation!

What is it exactly?

Its a giant mushroom, grows in fields on grass out in the open. It's very fleshy with quite a strong flavour. It's very good! Sliced and fried with butter, garlic and parsley n' pepper.

Very nice Lulu , I like them fried in butter , you need to be sure they are puffballs and not earthballs ,although you can eat earthballs when they are young and small , I'm sure you know the difference Lulu being a good country girl ;o)

I have never heard of an earthball. Is it smaller, brown flesh and powdery?
My friends had a taste too, big responsibility I thought to myself!! They obviously trusted me!!

You can't tell the difference very much when the are small Lulu but you can as they get bigger ~ The earth ball turns kind of browny / black inside they grow enormous like a football ,but then so does the Puffball ...I'm sure you would tell the difference if you had one ! don't worry ! you are still alive and kicking :o))

Don't know how I missed this, but I've never seen one before...You know I'm not sure I could eat anything like that...Mushrooms from the Supermarket, but nothing wild, just in case, (coward, yes I know)
