Another attempt to grow lavendar (last one died)

I didn't realise you have to cut them right back to the woody bits when they're finished flowering (I just left the one I had previously and it went all woody and died). A friend of mine has a full hedge of it and it's gorgeous. She's had it for years always cuts it right back so I'm gonna try that.

Yours is a french type lavender, which is a bit less hardy than the english types. What I would do is cut it down to just above woody bits now and then use the trimmings from this to take cuttings. Ive got some on the go at the moment. Hopefully will have lots more of these for next year.

We can't keep the French type, so have gone back to English and they are doing well.

Oh dear, didn't realise there were different types. It says Tuscany on the tag. Is this not hardy either?

THey're meant to be, but as I said we can't keep them over winter.

Think I'll cover the base with dead leaves before the winter and see if it survives!

I live in Vermont where it gets very cold in the winter. Here is my solution for the winter months. I find a couple of biggish flat stones and place them around the bush. They take in the sun and warm the lavender. I only have the English variety. When the lavender gets bigger, you do not have to be so careful.. Wells

English Lavender has the best fragrance and a softer hue. Much nicer plant in my opinion. I tried a white Lavender and failed with it a couple of years ago.
