This is an incredible flowering Oncidium blooming in the Botanical Building in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. Photo taken Nov. 14, 2011.

Yes the flower spike on this orchid was about 4ft/1.2m long.

I don't think it's too unusual. I've seen some very long flower spikes on orchids growing outdoors in the trees at the San Diego Zoo.

I planted one that has grown quite a bit on the porch the last couple of years,on a Trachy palm in my backyard. So far only the trachy fibers and sphagnum moss seem to be enough. I used the boot from a King palm and cut down to hold the Orchid in place. Rube Goldberg style.
