Oh yes, J! Along with the bananas, an orange tree and the 'fruits'. There's a whole lot of other stuff as well, which I've still to identify. I've asked that they don't just go in and cut it down willy-nilly when I'm not there.

I don't know yet, Scottish...I'm relying on Esther - she knows her mangoes! :))

She tells me that there are three different types...all for different culinary purposes. I don't think I care much as long as you can eat them off the tree, Scottish! Anything else is a bonus! :))))

As it happens, a coconut had just fallen off the tree in the back garden, just before I arrived today...the electrician was a bit shaken!

I've never had the chance to see any exotic trees for longer than the duration of a holiday before, Delonix. I'm looking forward to that!

Esther says that these are native Nigerian mangoes - very nice...but then she would say that! ;))

You're in store for a treat...mango trees flushing new growth are incredible! Some varieties of avocados have a similar flush of growth.

Mango trees are native to India and Southeast Asia. lol! :>)

This is most likely a local variety. San Diego has several varieties developed here, also.

Lol! Esther says everything is the 'native' variety and it's ALWAYS the best! Native chickens, native bananas, native mangros (as she calls them) and native pineapples! Actually, the native pineapples are a different shape and are much sweeter than the ones from over the border...I'll post a pic soon and maybe you could ID them for me! :)

Pineapples could most likely grow on trees...as they're an epiphytic plant.

There are palms here which look like big wooden pineapples!

The pineapples we eat grow on an aloe/cacti looking plant K. Not sure if you are kidding me on or not :)

I took a picture of a plant and showed it to everyone I knew...nobody guessed it was pineapple as they all thought they grew on trees too!

Well, I know I did! And I did ask Esther if the tree I described was a pineapple tree! She just laughed...! :)

I guess it could difficult to comprehend if you're not from a tropical climate or live in a subtropical climate like me. :>)

The area where many of my family members live in O'ahu, Hawaii used to be one of the biggest producers of pineapples in the U.S.

Not just pineapples! Do you remember the Spaghetti Tree story which one of the papers ran one April Fool's Say some (actually many) years back, Scottish? :)

Hawaiian pineapples are huge! They grow to perfection in the volcanic red soil in the tropical sun! Maui Gold is one of my favorite varieties.

The ones which are imported into France come mostly from SE Africa and a few islands in the Indian Ocean. They are the oval-shaped ones, quite small and can be a bit acidic.

Nigerian ones are not big - but definitely nicer!

I've grown pineapples in the past...they're not really large, however, very sweet! :>)

I could maybe try that, D...I'm planning to have a few more edible plants in the garden. Nothing complicated - chili peppers, garden eggs, tomatoes etc. Could I grow a pineapple from the top of a bought one?

Garden eggs are little green or cream coloured fruits (vaguely resembling tomatoes) which Esther chops up into tiny pieces to put into soups and stews. I can't really tell you what they taste like on their own - although, they can be eaten raw as a fruit as well. Solanum something or other...We get through quite a few every week! She says that they're good for the heart and blood! :))

Is it Solanum muricatum? That's just a guess...as there's thousands of Solanum species. :>)

Hi Delonix and Scottish! Been away for the weekend...

Delonix, garden eggs are variously described on Nigerian sites as being Solanum melongena and Solanaceous aethiopicum...? I don't know but they come in two different shapes and colours...

Got loads of room to grow pineapples in the garden now, Scottish - they sneaked in and 'tamed' the jungle while I was away!!!!

Thought they weren't allowed to touch unless you were there? :)
