Yum, lucky you! I love mangoes :)))

24 Nov, 2011

Should be ready by Febuary, Michaella! :)))

24 Nov, 2011

Lovely - are they the golden or red/green mangoes K?
Mango crumble - gorgeous!!!! and delicious on their own of course :)

24 Nov, 2011

Oh yes, J! Along with the bananas, an orange tree and the 'fruits'. There's a whole lot of other stuff as well, which I've still to identify. I've asked that they don't just go in and cut it down willy-nilly when I'm not there.

24 Nov, 2011

I don't know yet, Scottish...I'm relying on Esther - she knows her mangoes! :))

24 Nov, 2011

Oh I do hope they are the golden ones....I'm salivating just thinking of them :)

24 Nov, 2011

She tells me that there are three different types...all for different culinary purposes. I don't think I care much as long as you can eat them off the tree, Scottish! Anything else is a bonus! :))))

24 Nov, 2011

never seen them growing on a tree before!!

they would give you a headache if they fell on you.

24 Nov, 2011

Me neither, Sticki! Headache, yes...but not, 'death by coconut'! :))

24 Nov, 2011

i love coconut!!! but maybe not on my head.

24 Nov, 2011

As it happens, a coconut had just fallen off the tree in the back garden, just before I arrived today...the electrician was a bit shaken!

24 Nov, 2011

quite a shock for him!!

24 Nov, 2011

Maybe a hard hat to go with the gloves and boots then? Wonderful Mangoes...I remember the first time I saw these on St Lucia...such a thrill!

25 Nov, 2011

Perhaps I could make sporty protective headwear out of snails too, KS? ;)

I can't believe they're growing in MY garden....!

25 Nov, 2011

Are they really THAT big? lol ;)

26 Nov, 2011

LOL! Try googling 'giant African land snails', KS :)))

26 Nov, 2011

OK ;)

26 Nov, 2011

On a positive...eugh...note..gulp...their shells are absolutely stunning aren't they? ;)

26 Nov, 2011

Yes they are...and if my garden suddenly disappears overnight, it won't be hard to find the culprit! :))

Karenfrance:

Mango, my favorite fruit! Love them! These are getting pretty close to being ripe, yum!

It's nice to get photos of mango trees when they flush their new beautiful burgundy wine leaves.

Here's some of my pics:

27 Nov, 2011

I've never had the chance to see any exotic trees for longer than the duration of a holiday before, Delonix. I'm looking forward to that!

Esther says that these are native Nigerian mangoes - very nice...but then she would say that! ;))

Just going to look at your pic now...

28 Nov, 2011

You're in store for a treat...mango trees flushing new growth are incredible! Some varieties of avocados have a similar flush of growth.

Mango trees are native to India and Southeast Asia. lol! :>)

This is most likely a local variety. San Diego has several varieties developed here, also.

28 Nov, 2011

Lol! Esther says everything is the 'native' variety and it's ALWAYS the best! Native chickens, native bananas, native mangros (as she calls them) and native pineapples! Actually, the native pineapples are a different shape and are much sweeter than the ones from over the border...I'll post a pic soon and maybe you could ID them for me! :)

28 Nov, 2011

That's pretty funny! By the way, pineapples are native to Brazil! lol! :>)

28 Nov, 2011

I remember the first time I saw a field of pineapples growing - didn't think they grew in the ground like they do :)

28 Nov, 2011

LOL! Delonix! :))

What? Do they not grow on trees, Scottish??? :o

28 Nov, 2011

Pineapples could most likely grow on trees...as they're an epiphytic plant.

29 Nov, 2011

There are palms here which look like big wooden pineapples!

29 Nov, 2011

Had to look that word up Delonix....I like to learn new things :) So then they can grow on trees then :)
The pineapples we eat grow on an aloe/cacti looking plant K. Not sure if you are kidding me on or not :)

29 Nov, 2011

No I'm not, Scottish - honest! :)

29 Nov, 2011

Google image pineapple plantation :)
I took a picture of a plant and showed it to everyone I knew...nobody guessed it was pineapple as they all thought they grew on trees too!

29 Nov, 2011

Well, I know I did! And I did ask Esther if the tree I described was a pineapple tree! She just laughed...! :)

29 Nov, 2011

I got laughed at too :)

29 Nov, 2011

lol! :))))))))))))))))))

29 Nov, 2011

That's funny a pineapple tree! :>)

I guess it could difficult to comprehend if you're not from a tropical climate or live in a subtropical climate like me. :>)

The area where many of my family members live in O'ahu, Hawaii used to be one of the biggest producers of pineapples in the U.S.

30 Nov, 2011

Not just pineapples! Do you remember the Spaghetti Tree story which one of the papers ran one April Fool's Say some (actually many) years back, Scottish? :)

Are they the oval-shaped ones which we normally import into Europe or like the pear-shaped pineapples which Esther calls 'native', here, Delonix?

30 Nov, 2011

Hawaiian pineapples are huge! They grow to perfection in the volcanic red soil in the tropical sun! Maui Gold is one of my favorite varieties.

30 Nov, 2011

Oh, lovely!!! I'll bet that they are really sweet too!

The ones which are imported into France come mostly from SE Africa and a few islands in the Indian Ocean. They are the oval-shaped ones, quite small and can be a bit acidic.

Nigerian ones are not big - but definitely nicer!

30 Nov, 2011

Yes, they are very, very sweet!

The ones we get in the stores are HORRIBLE!!!
There's nothing better than home-grown pineapples and mangoes!

I've grown pineapples in the past...they're not really large, however, very sweet! :>)

1 Dec, 2011

I could maybe try that, D...I'm planning to have a few more edible plants in the garden. Nothing complicated - chili peppers, garden eggs, tomatoes etc. Could I grow a pineapple from the top of a bought one?

1 Dec, 2011

Don't remember that story K? Maybe you started reading the papers before I did :)

You'll have to try grow on Karen, how jealous would everyone be :))))

Now I need to ask - what are garden eggs?

1 Dec, 2011

Scottish...I was a very early reader... ;))

Garden eggs are little green or cream coloured fruits (vaguely resembling tomatoes) which Esther chops up into tiny pieces to put into soups and stews. I can't really tell you what they taste like on their own - although, they can be eaten raw as a fruit as well. Solanum something or other...We get through quite a few every week! She says that they're good for the heart and blood! :))

I will investigate pineapple growing!

2 Dec, 2011

Is it Solanum muricatum? That's just a guess...as there's thousands of Solanum species. :>)

2 Dec, 2011

Investigate on Sherlock!!

2 Dec, 2011

Hi Delonix and Scottish! Been away for the weekend...

Delonix, garden eggs are variously described on Nigerian sites as being Solanum melongena and Solanaceous aethiopicum...? I don't know but they come in two different shapes and colours...

Got loads of room to grow pineapples in the garden now, Scottish - they sneaked in and 'tamed' the jungle while I was away!!!!

6 Dec, 2011

Thought they weren't allowed to touch unless you were there? :)

7 Dec, 2011

Hmmm...lost in translation it would seem, Scottish :)

7 Dec, 2011

That sounds about right!!! Does it still look ok though?

7 Dec, 2011

Umm...bit of a blank canvas right now...still got some trees...
And a lot of sand!!! All the better to plant in tho'... :)))

7 Dec, 2011

You'll need to get some buckets and spades to make sand castles too! :)

8 Dec, 2011

Plenty buckets AND spades...
All still belong to the workers, tho'! :)

8 Dec, 2011

You'll need to build one and put a little saltire on top for us :)

8 Dec, 2011

Done!!!
...Have to get Number One son to bring out the Saltire next week! :)))
