I remember when a new colleague moved here from Trinidad some years ago...he couldn't believe how short-lived our flowers were because of course all these tropical flowers last for weeks, some for months!

That's a very nice Heliconia psittacorum! I used to have one...it died during our 7 year drought. My Heliconia angusta 'Yellow Christamas' and 'Red Christmas died in the drought, also. :>(

Scorpions are very common here in San Diego County, and throughout California. They usually don't bother, though. They eat a lot of bugs. :>)

I've only ever seen one (well two, but the second one was almost microscopic) and it was living in the BBQ of a villa we rented in Italy... It was a huge black one, just like Scorpio. It didn't bother us, tho'...just vacated its home everynight when we lit the coals!
