beautiful.............

Thanks guys!

Amy - I like the lottery of buying them out of bloom. So far I've been lucky, but I have a Phal that has eight spikes or branches which is bound to be one that I dislike!

Good buy M, lovely flower :o)

Thanks PA, although they don't seem to know which way is up!!

What a bargain that was, well done you, must have the magic touch.

Got lucky really - I struggle with the Oncidium alliance usually. It's in the conservatory (cooler), which suits the Vulystekeara well, but as they're just sold as "Cambria orchid" over here I had no idea that it was a Vulystekeara until it bloomed. If I'd kept it in the rest of the house I doubt that it would have bloomed!

nice one Meanie, you don't see many of the Vulystekeara's down here normally cambria and odontoglossums. it's a nice specimen.

It's very beautiful! I never knew the name of this orchid. It's a very commonly available orchids here.

Typically, this has a very long inflorescence, how long is this one?

This was tagged as Cambria Surreylad - "Cambria" is one of the Vuylstekeara hybrids but here in the Europe commonly applied to any of the Oncidium alliance intergenerics.

I got the id from another forum, although I left it as Vuylstekeara as the poster couldn't guarantee the absolute hybrid.

The flower spike is about 40cm long with many branches Delonix!

Ahh i see, i know it's a large group that covers them, crossed with the miltoia's and oncidiums weren't they?

16 Jan, 2012

And a few others too Surreylad! Makes care for them a little hit and miss sometimes..........

16 Jan, 2012

Meanie:

Wow, that seems pretty short! Most of the ones I've seen are double this size. I guess it depends on the plant.

16 Jan, 2012

Delonix - now that I know what it is I'll be able to care for it better. As I say, that is the problem with buying out of bloom.

16 Jan, 2012

that's the joy of orchids ;-))

Meanie:

Yes, I know what you mean. My orchids are not blooming now. I definitely need to feed them. They get no fertilizer at all (and I have the orchid food).

16 Jan, 2012

Or the frustration of marketing SL........

Mine rarely get fed either Delonix! Growing conditions are the real key to blooming.

Meanie:

I agree with you, growing conditions are very important. The best way the majority of the orchids grow here is under lath. They need a high level of light, but very little direct sunlight and no reflected sun.

18 Jan, 2012

I've grown this pretty much the same way, but cooler!!

18 Jan, 2012

Many orchids like the cooler weather...that's the reason why so many are in full bloom, now. Of course, there's the more tropical ones which bloom in summer and need a lot of heat and humidity.

My Epidendrum orchids have more bloom now, then in summer.

19 Jan, 2012

Wow, you certainly know how to get them to flower Keith! :)) Its so tropical looking that one! :)

21 Jan, 2012

That's the problem with these intergenerics Karen - I don't! I'll try a few more cool now though.....

21 Jan, 2012

:) well, you seem to be getting the hang of it then :)

22 Jan, 2012

I think that success with orchids is all about trial and error!

22 Jan, 2012

Thanks Homebird - I'll post another photo later as there are many blooms open now.
