probably taken in the 80s - this is taken from the top of the island, showing the approach - at the bottom is the bridge across. The line down the right side seems to be on the print

it was fun to climb! and you can tell how many steps were on this side, by the height the picture is taken from. The bridge is fairly new: it must have been impregnable with a drawbridge ...

Gosh Fran - this place is so similar to some photos I posted ages ago (on 24th June 2008) - quite amazing when you think of the poor people who had to build the thing ...

lol and all done by hand - well, maybe a few basic crane-type mecahnisms for lifting stones. but how they built on the actual island - they must have bridged it for that, then taken it down after, or replaced with a more defendable one.
There were some places in the castle closed to the public, because they had archaeologists in (makes them sound like an infestation!) but the sides of the island were alsmost as steep as the slopes you can see, dunno how they worked without sliding off.
Merlin's Cave is to the left and round the curve of the cliff a bit; think I took some pics, but finding them ...
Lol Terry, we probably took them from about the same place; best viewpoint possible

thank you, TT - it's hard not to take a good pic when you've got such a dramatic scene in front of you.
I'll have to find your Tintagel pics, Terry. I'm still working through your photos so I've obviously not got to them yet!

Oh Fran, it'll take you a month of Sundays! It'll perhaps be quicker if you go straight to the last page of very old photos I posted - the place is called Civita di Bagnoregio - quite a traipse up the hill but what a breathtaking view from the top!!

thanks, dear, will do! *s* I'd started checking out your photos from the front, I'll have to start at the back and work forward.
Wow, that's even more staggering! oh, boy, I'm going to spend some time tiptoeing through your tulips!

with a coast as wild as that, it's no wonder that it's a land of magic and mystery, and wonder
