Pleione "Tongariro" (pleione formosana)

Just though that I would post this before Bampy comes along and humbles us all with his collection!
They had a lucky escape last night as I almost forgot that they were outside!

Frost here too!
This is just the effect that I was after when I crammed them into this pot!

Beautiful colour. I've never tried these - they look very tender. Do they go outside later?

I'm glad you remembered them Meanie they are 'just perfect '

Nice one :))

Ojibway - not so much tender as dislike cold and wet. They will be put out permanently mid May time until early autumn. Three pseudobulbs last year produced eleven flowing sized ones (plus many smaller ones) for this year.

Thanks Sticki, SL, Amy and Paul!
I'm looking forward to Bampy's too!

Absolutely gorgeous!

Is this the true color? Mine are more fuchsia.

TBH Alex, it really is very close indeed! Not perfect, but close.
I was in a hurry to get a decent shot of the group before Bampy came along and humbled us!!!!

TBH???

I can't wait to see Bampy's crop.

To Be Honest!!!

Oh.

20 Mar, 2012

You have just reminded me that I need to go and get my Datura in from the greenhouse....aaaaaaargh!

21 Mar, 2012

Datura are pretty hardy Karen.

Just realised that I've left the Pleione out all night, but no frost so all is good.

22 Mar, 2012

It's growing very well! It's too bad they only bloom once a year.

23 Mar, 2012

Really pleasing when they do bloom though Delonix!

23 Mar, 2012

Yes, the flowers are really nice! My Cattleyas only bloom once a year, too.

24 Mar, 2012

My Catt has just come into bud!

24 Mar, 2012

Meanie:

I'm jealous! :>)

Mine were in bloom in the middle of March last year. I don't see any buds on mine this year, yet (I need to fertilize my orchids). Although, Cattleya is a spring to summer bloomer here in San Diego.

24 Mar, 2012

Mine is a little late this year..............

24 Mar, 2012

For some reason I thought Cattleya was a spring/summer bloomer here in San Diego. However, I read it prefers to set buds in winter. Maybe that's why I see so many for sale here in winter. I've also read they need a lot of light...I think I need to move mine out into some full sun, what do you think?

25 Mar, 2012

Mine deffo needs full light to perform. Damn thing needs re-potting too!!

25 Mar, 2012

Do Dendrobiums need full sun too?

26 Mar, 2012

Most Phalaenopsis type Dens are pretty forgiving Alex, but they will always perform better in a cool north facing window. My Den.kingianiums need a proper cool period to rebloom and must be north facing.

Meanie:

I did notice when I had my orchids along the wall between my house and my neighbor, the orchids set buds and bloomed. They had a few hours of full sun.

I have to be careful here, though. As, they can burn if it gets too hot.

26 Mar, 2012

That doesn't surprise me!

26 Mar, 2012

My alter ego has returned!!!

26 Mar, 2012

My alter ego returned TWICE!!!

Meanie:

Iciar avatar surfaced a couple of weeks ago under my name (comment), also. Not sure what's up with this.
Maybe we should write to Peter.
