What a gem Sbg, lovely colour. There seems to be something mystical about them arising from the earth....

That is so lovely Sbg - never seen one that colour before

It's funny because I can't keep the white one, only the purple one

That is a lovely shade of pink. I have never seen that one before. I have my blue ones in a clay pot and for the first time ever I think I have cracked keeping them for more than one year. They seem to benefit from being raised up and growing in free draining soil.

I've got a purple one which gets two flowers on a year! I've tried it in the garden (to see if it would spread) but it only got one flower on, so I put it back into the pot. How do you get them to spread??

Scotsgran - yes, they need really sharp drainage and poor soil

I read somewhere that if you allow the heads to float away they will self sow but they may take a year to germinate - I'm still waiting. I suspect they will be weeded out in the belief that they are weeds because we did not know what they were.

Or they germinate in someone else's garden

LOL Andrewr then they weed them out thinking they are weeds. I think I will collect my seed heads this year and have a go at sowing them in the hope that they will grow. I found a site that explained how to do it but it was difficult to understand. Should the seeds be left in the fridge for 6 weeks before sowing or should the plants which grow from the seeds be put in the fridge. It did say to cut off the feathery bits before sowing. Any advice would be helpful.

the seeds need the cold treatment. cutting off the 'down' just reduces a source of mould. I have left the seed in a pot outside before and got some good germination. I collected the seed when they opened fluffy and sowed it in a gritty soil and just put the pot behind the coldframe.

Thank you Seaburngirl I will certainly try that. I am very pleased with myself at the moment because I planted some Dierama seeds on 29.1.12 and nothing happened until 2 weeks ago and now I have 11 out of 20 seeds growing nicely. I think I can expect more. The skill level reqd. is described as experienced. On the other hand Pulsatilla are supposed to be easy to grow so I will see what I can do taking your advice.

I was lucky and managed to pick up a different red one to the one I have and also a white one at the SRGC show in Edinburgh. No lovely pale pink ones though.
