Meanie:
Thanks! I don't know the species of this Yucca. I used to think it was a Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia)...but it doesn't get cold enough here to grow this tree (I've been told).

Have had this overwinter in the garden...only caveat is that it must be kept VERY dry until spring, and that's not easy to do in this climate. 45* north lat. amazing plant. and the blossom is really spectacular.

What I have is the filamentosa. I can understand how it would be nearly impossible to beat, Marguerite. It is surviving here in this climate! Will lift it in the autumn..that way the roots get pruned and the cold takes care of any that might remain. Delonix: The friend who gave me my plants had decided he didn't want them anymore..they had come thro a cold Ontario winter planted in the dry band of sandy soil at the foundation of his house... I thought it was dead this spring..but put it in the hottest driest part of the front bed and it's up again and has two pups...

Dry, dry, dry...that seems to be the key to winter survival. if they get wet the get frozen off.
