wow that is a nice one Amy i love it :-)

Very pretty. I have something similar, but it seems to dry out during these hot days. I never know weather it is better to leave the grass without any irrigation or irrigate it regularly as flowers.

That's different, nice.

That is so pretty Amy..a lovely grass :o)

Is it an annual or perennial. I bought a dark red grass years ago with a label that stated it was perennial. Maybe in its native habitat. I love different coloured grasses but if they don't last the winter, they dont get grown again.

Thats a lovely one Amy, I was looking at something similar last week, with white plumes though (nice sideways pic???)

Thanks everyone It's a perrennial 2ndhand Some of the red grasses don't always survive the winter very well ,perhaps your red grass was Imperata rubra ,it has to be protected from the winter cold by mulching , I know you like your grasses Janey, I do to they are so attractive grown either in amongst other plants or on their own in pots :o)

I have Imperata growing in ky rubbery and it loves it, comes back year after year. The grass i bought was a pennisetum, almost black. But I will look out for the one you have and will chance it.

I bought the dark red one last year, split it and put half in greenhouse and half I mulched in garden. Neither survived!

Oh crumbs ! That doesn't sound very promising Tet , The Lady I spoke to in the nursery said hers survived well through the winter in fact I even joked that I would take it back if it died LOL .. fingers crossed for mine then !!

This is a beautiful grass Amy. I do hope it survives for you. I'm putting it in my faves and hope to hear how it does. I never thought it would happen, but I am falling for grasses now! lol

Yes I grew a dark leaved one too on offer at B&Q thought I'd got a bargain, said perennial on the label, but mine didn't survive winter either, hope yours does better Amy, I'll be waiting to see next year :-))

Into faves! Beautiful :)

Amy I love it, not sure I could get any more grasses in, they get so large, so quickly here.Have just planted your Sobaria Sem it has made a delightful plant, really pleased with it, will post some pics soon....
29 Aug, 2012
I'm thinking that I will have to protect this grass somehow this winter and report back in the spring :o))
I'm so pleased the little 'Sem ' is growing Angela .. the reddish tinge to the foliage in the spring is a joy to see ....

Yes Amy, I have one pennisetum...Hameln...it doesn't do very well. Hasn't 'flowered' since the year I bought it, but it's still alive....so there's hope!
29 Aug, 2012
Love it Amy, but I'm pretty sure it's not hardy . . . really sorry as it's so pretty. :((
29 Aug, 2012
I hope it survives for you Karen I have two of the Pennistetum 'Hameln' also two Pennistetum setaceum 'Rubrum' ,they have all grown into beautiful large plants , Sheila It's so annoying when you ask when you buy if something is hardy and they tell you 'yes' It didn't give any details on the ticket .. :o(
29 Aug, 2012
If you've kept P. 'Rubrum' going, then maybe your garden IS sheltered enough to keep P. 'Summer Samba' going too . . . hope so!
29 Aug, 2012
Fingers crossed Sheila :o)

I have tried all over to get this plant. would it be possible for me to buy some seeds from you or to send me a rooted cutting.
thanks.
Irene

Irene you would have been more than welcome if I could have sent you something I would have ,the fact is it didn't survive the winter ,we covered it carefully against the frost but it has died , I have left the root in but nothing is happening I'm so sorry , it's disappointing when you lose a plant it wasn't cheap either , I also lost two other nice grasses in a similar style 'Pennisetum Rubrum ' I've decided not to buy any more grasses unless recommended by others as being winter hardy ... I'm sorry I can't help ☺
