The Greek eye someone gave me years ago and it's been lying in a pot. Thought it about time to hang it up. Also hanging sheeps wool for nesting material.

That's a wonderful idea, I'll do the same!

I love the Greek Eye the sun will catch those colours beautifully ,the sheeps wool is a good idea to !

It did look very pretty in the sun Amy. Spenny..have you a spare eye!!
Sticki, I suppose they would like some mealworms but they are too expensive. Although I did leave the bones from our sea bass out for the fox!

Makes a nice change not to see that in a kebab shop ; )

if there's an Eye that'll keep squirrels off I'd buy a box of 'em! it looks good there.

I'm sure we could skewer some meat out there one day soon Stevie!
Not sure if the squirrels really mind getting the evil eye except from a lurcher, who is about the only dog I've seen to actually catch a squirrel, although Jazzy did try when she was a pup!

Another tip, if anyone has a tumble dryer, put the fluff out from that, the birds love it too. Love your 'eye'.
24 Mar, 2013
Oh I forgot about that GM. Our fluff is black and white and hairy for some reason!

I'd read somewhere that human and pet hair would also be used, I was working up the nerve to ask my hairdresser to save me the sweepings so that I could put them out - would have to bundle them somehow, to stop them blowing all over the place.
24 Mar, 2013
Lol Lou, wonder why?? You can still use it anyway the birdies wont mind.
24 Mar, 2013
Am definitely going to use it! Pity I can't just have 'open house' and all the birdies just pop in and take what hair they want!

I've seen some "fleece baskets" meant for putting nesting materials in for birds to help themselves: it looked like a fat ball feeder, maybe use one of those if you have one. The fleece should stand out against the frame so it won't matter which colour it is

I can't believe that any bird in its right mind would be wanting to make a nest at the moment. It's freezing out these!
25 Mar, 2013
it'd be making a thermal nest, if anything! Feel sorry for ground-nestingbirds - where's safe, between snow and flood?
25 Mar, 2013
I've just filled some pots up with the tumble drier fluff, bet I find a wee vole nesting soon!
25 Mar, 2013
Lol Lou, bet you will too, or a local field mouse!

got my hair cut the other day, asked him to save my hair, and told him why. He must have cut off at least four inches, but at the end only presented me with about half a handful. ah well. it's outside now, have to wait to see if it's wanted

Also Fran, human hair is a good fox deterrent, a bit like mens pee is!
30 Mar, 2013
lol I'llmake a note of that, GM, though at the mo it's squrrels I want to deter. Next time I'll take a bag with me and collect ally my hair (or leave hte bag and ask them to fill it with sweepings during the day) and see how that works
30 Mar, 2013
Good idea Fran!! Surely they only throw it away??
30 Mar, 2013
Jokes about bald eagles keep coming to mind!! And men's pee deters me too!
Just noticed that our fox is due some cubs. Went to the local far shop today and he's given me a bin bag full of meat and bones!
I am hoping that in return she will bring her cubs round early morning so I can watch and photograph. Of course that means getting up very early indeed and throwing breakfast out for them!
30 Mar, 2013
I suppose that all cut hair gets thrown, GM, but I've hesitated to ask in cse they think I'm some kind of weird perv! Three's a braber shop literally just round the corner, I could ask them, and if they do think I'm weird, well, I don't have to go back as they only cut men's hair, but dunno if that'd be long enough to suit the birds.
That's a great idea, Lulu, but then I'm not the one who'd going to have to make that sacrifice. *s* I'm just one of the oens who'll appreciate any photos you can take

I quite like getting up early if the light is perfect. It was this morning, I almost need some after sun after today!
31 Mar, 2013
I have enjoyed geting up very early, though that doesn't often happen - the day is fresh and clean and it belongs you to alone; it feels like you're the only one awake at that time and there's endless potential. sigh, i must try getting to bed a bit earlier, so that I can enjoy it more.
31 Mar, 2013
It's a pity sometimes I have to share mine with 3 big, noisy dogs! They love an early stroll though,
