Youngdaisyd - the small one on the right of the photo is a Taro, which is much the same thing.
Thanks Spennygarden!

Absolutely wicked! How long will it take?

We have this growing in a pot, unless OH has killed it off, it grew to two ft but did not flower, was rather glad it did not as the smell is like rotting flesh!!

No idea Sticki - this is very much learn as you go along!
How large was his tuber DD?

I didnt notice the smaller one Meanie lol. Mine are in plastic bags on top of the Central heating boiler, ill check in a week or so. ive used this method before and had success but once planted out didn't grow as tall as they should have, (rubbish summer) then last year i was kindly given a lovely 3footer, I had big dreams for that one But while i was at work one afternoon we had unexpected heavy hailstone and the poor thing got ripped to shreads! It never did recover after that :(( so here i start again in the hope of 1or2 huge Alocasia..

Nothing like as large as yours, it came already potted, and I thought I had lost it, but it hung on in there, have looked in our heated porch (OHs glasshouse lol) and I cannot see it, bet he has thrown it away, and has not told me lol

DD - ask down at your local Asian grocers for Elephants Foot Yam.

I wish you the best of luck! This plant needs a TREMENDOUS amount of heat to grow well! I don't even think we have enough heat here in San Diego to grow this plant well...and you know how hot it can get here.

Delonix - apparently it can be grown perfectly well here in the UK. From my research heat appears to be less of an issue than controlling the amount of water that they receive.
The first trick is to get them into growth. It is not unheard of for them to miss a season. When the roots emerge it is then time to introduce them gradually to the growing medium.
It's all about setting myself a challenge. If it comes off perfectly, it'll bloom. If it's partially successful, I get some interesting foliage. If it bombs, I eat 'em!!!!

I was right. There are people all over the country raising triffids! Are you sure you eat them or do they eat you?

That's interesting information. I always think of any yams as wanting very, very hot temps with oppressive humidity. I know most yams are native to the deep hot, humid tropics.
You'll have to keep us posted to see what happens. :>)

Cammomile - It is an Asian (and South American) vegetable.
I will Delonix. It's a bit of a long shot over here, but the money involved is not great.

Meanie, with your greenthumb, I'm sure you'll get it to grow. I may try one myself...I see them for sale here all the time.

Gosh I wish you good luck with that Meanie , what an amazing looking plant I hope you are successful with it !
