What beauties and from one plant too!

What beauties and from one plant too!

Have been so disappointed about the garden lately and then I am rewarded with this, in my little tiny front garden! The Michaelmas daisy to the left is for the bees, that patch will be a buzzing later on :)

Lovely front garden, Gill :)

I remember these from before. You inspired me to try iris here, but sadly, not enough dry sunny ground! It's a wonderful plant Gill...stunning! I hope things are getting better generally!

What an astounding colour! Beautiful. How long did one plant take to get to this stage? No idea of the name of the iris, I suppose?

I love iris and once had one very much like those - they're stunning. Sadly, irises don't do well in my garden, mostly coming up blind but I just don't learn from my mistakes and will keep buying them!

Hi Folks, well having just returned from a wonderful weekend in Giverney, and seeing Monet' s incredible garden exploding with Iris I am in awe of this beautiful plant. I 1st posted a picture of this iris 2/3 years ago and last year had no flowers and thought I had lost them, I dug them up, split them and re-planted and this is the result, over 40 flowers from just a single purchase. Gattina, Their name is 'Sultans Palace'. I used to have hundreds of Iris in the back garden, many colours, some beauties but I got rid of them and now regret that move! Thank you all for your kind comments, my garden has started to improve but it is still quite cold. :(
Tuesday, don't plant them too deep, dig them up and just sit them on grit with their roots below the surface but the rhizome above, it works. Karen try the front garden, it could work!!

Funnily enough have been out this evening and bought three more; one, a similar colour to yours, one a soft pinky -peach and the last a fabulous violet shade and have planted them just as you say. I have always exposed the rhizomes but don't think I was giving them enough drainage and also, as the chap at the nursery said, they really need to bake and last year was really not kind to irises. He was confident that the recent hot spell should bring results next year. Mine are all in the front garden as they are a complete failure at the back!

It only occurred to me last year that maybe we have ideal conditions here for irises, i.e. thinnish soil, so the rhizomes can sit on top, and lots of very hot summer sun. I've been buying and planting 3 different types of white iris this year: if they do as well as yours, Gill, my garden should look like an impressionist painting within a couple more years (provided the blinking porcupines don't get 'em again this year).

Terrible problems with porcupines here in Lancashire too!

Tuesday, it is so easy to get the bug isn't it? Your 3 plants sound lovely and it has just occurred to me that my front patch faces south.....so very warm, when it shines, and that is what Iris like, I also think a handful of grit under the rhizome helps too!
Gatt....you are right, sounds like the ideal conditions, in Monet's garden the white Iris stood out like beacons they were fab. Also the white with a navy blue edge too. Google Monet's garden and take a look. Porcupines????? that's amazing!

"Amazing" wears off pretty quickly and "darned nuisance" takes over with a vengeance, Gill. Believe me, you don't want 'em. Tuesdaybear, that'll be the ones I sent you last year - they multiply very rapidly. ;o)

Those would be the ones, Gattina, and thanks!! Now if you can just send me some of your lovely sunshine too, that would be great, only we've lost ours - very careless, I know.

Oh Lor', I think we may just have snaffled it, TB - it was freezing at the weekend, and today I'm about to go and sit in the sun (about 28°, I reckon) with a cuppa. Oh yes, and last night, the porcupines came back. Pros and cons to living here, you know. (sorry about the sunshine)
