Are these what are also called "Angels' fishing rods"? Will they grow anywhere?

Yes Shirl they are also called 'Wand Flower' mine are planted in the herbaceous border amongst the other plants they need well-drained soil and full sun ....

Thank you Amy, I might try those. I think I have seen them planted beside ponds and as I am trying to clean out our pond & 'start again'!!, I could plant one in the bed nearby.

they would look lovely in a pond situation Shirl provided you kept them in a sunny drained spot . let me know if you would like some seed later in the autumn or if you would prefer to start off with buying a decent plant ..

Many thanks Amy, I will keep that in mind, very kind of you. However, must see how I get on with getting the pond back to some sort of order first!! My son ids going to try & mend a leak in it. We know there is a real hole near the top, but we think a crack runs from that, deeper into the pond, because the water level always goes lower than the hole!!
It can still be used as a decent pond, but looks much nicer when full and not showing the black plastic!!

We have one of those spreading conifer type shrubs (forget the name!) growing over the side so I think I might try cutting that back or even get rid of it, because it is far too big now! Then I could have a bed on the sunny side of the pond.
The bed on the other side is quite shady and then the other two sides have paving.
Blimey! sounds a lot of work!!

Sounds like a big job Shirl , we had a big pond in our last garden and what with the heron pinching the fish plus all the work looking after it we decided when we moved here it was one job we could do without , we have a small raised one ( I'm not sure if you saw my blog ages ago ) it only has a couple of goldfish in it that the Grandchildren bought ,they are here on holiday this week so we may possably take them to get another couple , good luck with your project !

Yes Lori they are a hardy perennial they get better each year ,good luck with the BB's ;o)

put the BBs in the shade garden on the edge of the forest..

Sounds ideal Lori they love wooded areas , fingers crossed we will see some photos next year :o)
