Moss

Wow...I have never seen so much moss in a lawn, well done OH...:))

There are several reasons for this under watering through summer or over watering, if your grass is under watered through summer does it get brown patches as if so moss will grow to the weaker part.

If you lawn is water loged, I use to in my other gardens stick a fork in every 12 inch or so and wiggle it back and fro and brush sand a little grit down the holes.

With this garden I have no grass it turned to moss as trees one side and 6ft fence neighbour put up the other side, which shaded all my grass it all turned to moss, so it was all dug up, the other side the trees killed all my grass.

There is a plus you could use the moss for hanging baskets.

Well done to your OH, Amy. Our lawn is still much too squidgy to scarify, but my OH has done the one at the croquet club - with a drive on!

We go through this every year we don't like to use moss killers but are thinking we might have to resort to using it , our lawn is dry 3p never water logged we also have an aeration machine that makes holes all over it we never water it unless it really is the only option to save it as we have too much lawn we prefer to save the water for the plants ... we are the opposite of you Sheila you are wet we are dry my OH would love to use the club drive-on scarifyer it would save so much hard work :o)

It can be caused through dryness too not enough water it said on a link.

Good heavens, never seen so much, we have some, but our lawns are tiny compared to yours...

mine is just like this too. I shall be starting with the electric scarifyer soon. I've two empty compost bins. Is it ok to put the moss in them?

It's a lot of work Angela one we could do without , Karen OH says it's o.k to put the moss in your compost bin as long as you don't have moss killer on it if it has don't put it in ..I hope you lawn dries out soon HB but then the work on the moss will start :o(

Yes Dawn it would take over, although it isn't ours we mow a long strip of the field next to us on the other side of the fence a kind of barrier to try to keep the brambles from reaching us the moss has almost completely taken over there it's like walking on a soft carpet , Kat how did you know I have ferns growing in that corner just out of sight :o) Kat was peeping wasn't she Karen :o))

Moss seems to have taken over the lawns around here. Scarifying comes to mind. Perhaps in April when we have weed, fed and mosskilled. Looks like you have done well in getting that lot out Amy. It's about the time for brown bin collection.

Linda the Lawn looks a right mess at the moment lets hope it soon recovers we have scattered more grass seed and done what we can to help it along ....

The lawn at the front seems to have more moss on it as it's in the shelter of the house. The back lawn gets more sunshine. We mix a sandy compost mix and add grass seed about April time. I must have a look at the flower seed packets. I'm going to mix the seeds all up and scatter them in the centre of the flower beds and see what comes up.

Wow what a lot of hard work getting that lot out!

The birds would love it for nesting - as long as there is no harmful chemicals amongst it.

Good, what a lot you've got! I get a lot of moss here too, but whenever I have tried to rake it out my arms give out before the moss does! Your OH has done a good job :)

Our lawn is in full sunshine Linda it doesn't seem to make much difference here .. There's no chemicals in it Shirl and yes the birds do use it for nesting we've seen them scrapping it up also when we pull the old nests out of the bushes you can see the moss in them , Gee I couldn't do this my arms would give out before reaching the end of one strip you are brave to even give it a go :o))

Wow, he did do well Amy.....moss is such a pest isn't it I have a huge area here too, it's a nice bright green though...:))

It looks unsightly at the moment Janey hopefully it will recover before the good weather ...

Oh good grief .. so much moss! I struggled with one of those fan shaped lawn rakes ... have done about two thirds but the brown garden bin is full now ... well that's my excuse for stopping!

It's hard word even with a scarifier Shirley I'm useless with rake type things it always give me a pain in the neck :o(
