Spring Pond 2014 [who ate the Frog Spawn?]

Spring Pond 2014 [who ate the Frog Spawn?]

A few days ago my neighbour gave me a nice big clump of Frog Spawn I was so pleased;0) BUT imagine my disappointment when 3 days later it had all disappeared over night, any ideas who could have eaten it?

Not guilty ;o)
Pretty pond area.

Carole, I wouldn't fret too much yet as this happened in our little pond - lots of spawn one day and gone the next - pond is now full of tiny Tadpoles! I think it sometimes sinks out of sight but still develops as it should. Just keep watching! :o)

Any fish in there Carole? I've been told They can eat it up very fast...let's hope it's just gone deeper as Shirley says!

No fish Karen, think its the Phantom Gobbler, lol

Tel you what...speaking of gobbler....you should see willow with her food! It's hilarious! She's so laid back and easy going until she sees that food bowl...then....gobblegobblegobble....all gone in two shakes of a cats tail!

Time you started feeding that husband of yours,Carole..shame on you for having him forage for food ! ....as if ! :o) I know how much he loves his porridge..but there is a limit !

As much as I agree with you Sandra , but there is a limit and I think the culprit lies deep in the depths of the pond. Still think I have The Giant Phantom Frog Spawn Gobbler! [just trying to make a name for myself lol].

That is a very pretty area and as I have a phobia of frogs and toads I am not too upset reading your story!!!
It is looking lovely.

hi Carole...are most of the plants around your pond in pots? Very nice effect..I once had a toad that i wanted to stay in my old garden...gave him a little bridge and toad house to make him welcome...caught him trying to sneak out the gate, herded him back in..[wanted him, didn't want to touch him]..still he didn't stay...was it something i said? Sigh!.....maybe your spawn are lying low, waiting their chance...your pond has given me an idea for my little place....thanks for posting...lots of chuckles...:o]]

Hi Oaadpat, you made me chuckle about your Toad what a shame he was intent on moving on, I had one last year I found him hiding under a bucket, but hopefully he is still around as I put the bucket back over him lol I did a blog on making the pond if you want to look back and yes most of the plants are in pots arond it, I love this area it gives me so much pleasure, last year I saw a Newt in the pond maybe he is the culprit who has eaten the Frog Spawn!!

Hi Amy I do hope there are some still lurking in the pond, but it was strange it all dsappeared over night so maybe it has all sunk to the bottom ;0)

Pansy it might be a Waterhen they get into mine and eat the frogspawn. I do have fish in the pond but always have some spawn left to hatch. This year has been especially bad for the waterhen attack, she is very determined to get in the pond. Not a lot we can do to stop her, she nibbles at the lily and makes a right mess, ah well thats nature for you. Hope you get some more maybe the toad will lay a string of spawn and then you will get lots of baby toads.

I havent seen any Waterhens around here Olive! yours sounds very mischievious lol but hopefully my taddies are nice and safe at the bottom of the pond and Mr toad may find a nice lady to decorate my pond with lol

The blackbirds love frog spawn & I bet they gobbled up yours. I have seen them doing this at a lake across the road where I live. I imagine some must escape tho' or there wouldn't be any, would there?

15 Apr, 2014

Thanks Feverfew, you could be right there I never thought of the Blackbirds and hey are always in the garden;0)

I hope the optimists are right Carole, cos mine has vanished too:-( I had a pair of newts last year, but don't think that's the answer. Let's hope it has just sunk. I did see magpies eating tadpoles last year and had to keep chasing them off, but haven't seen them eating from the pond this year yet. Your pond's looking lovely now:-)

Im sorry to hear about your Frogspawn too BA, I have a feeling it was the Newts too, but fingers crossed we both may get a nice suprise and see a few Taddies swimming around soon ;0)

I wouldn't like to be a tadpole, such a precarious life. Yesterday I found a little frog, (about an inch or so long) in our little downstairs wetroom, no idea how he got thereas it's not near a door. He didn't move when I picked him up or try to escape. I put him into the pond and he just lay on top of the water, legs splayed. I worried about him drowning so picked him up again and put him on top of some Canadian pond weed, he seemed to rouse himself then and burrowed down through the pondweed so hope he's ok:-)

Awww I hope he survives too;0)

How pretty it all looks Carole, will your frogspawn be hiding behind your pond plants do you think? Or as the girls say it sinks as the taddies get heavier as they grow. I do wish I had a pond, imthink Pops and Ted would enjoy it too....:))

19 Apr, 2014

Hi Janey I think you are right the Frog spawn is probably at the bottom I spotted more tiny Taddies swimming around yesterday, the Pond area is only small but I love it and Im always on my knees looking at what I can see lurking in the depths! I can imagine Pops and Ted would be straight in there lol
