I was amazed at the amount of silt and sand that accumulated in the pond (...now not so much of a pond..) and the stuff is deep...and like quicksand so I dare not stand in the pond to remove it! Will make that an autumn job and distribute the silt over the flower beds.

the flowers will love it - natural organic bonus. good that the silt will be recycled. do you have any plans for the sand?

It would be too hard to separate Fran...so I'll pitch it all together and let the freeze thaw of winter take a hand. Most all the soil is sandy compared with my last garden which was a horrible landfill mess...some sand...some clay...mostly builder mess bulldozed with old concrete and asphalt mixed in...so horrible that I decided after digging my first flower beds that I'd never have a veggie garden there...just didn't know for sure what might be in that soil.

landfill, urgh! a lot of town gardens are mostly made of builder's rubble with a bit of soil on top! And one never knows what was there before the houses were built - in London they wree building houses on the site a former chemical factory - they said they'd cleared and cleaned the gorund, but all the same ...
