Thanks Terratoonie ..the yard goes further up at the end by about another 6 foot ....and also under 2/3 of the staircase ....totally mad shape....the stone raise bit is to hide tree and ivy roots plus totally embedded weeds ..all of the materials to make it were scavanged over a couple of years & the fence is brand new ( downstairs neighbour is not into gardening)...I still have a lot more ideas and the plants need too establish but I'm really happy..just wish I had the weather to enjoy it

I guess the area gets a mix of sunshine and shade ?

It's mainly west facing and only starts getting sun in the afternoon (I'm towards the end on a terrace of houses. The sun runs through this path on an evening...so it is under the staircase aswell .I want a pot pond next year somewhere in that corner and the arch has honeysuckle on the left and virginia creeper on the right.....The staircase is the same and gets the sun at the height of summer until about 8 at night

Makes such a difference as to what you can grow ...

Hosta and azaleas seem to like it and of course me now flowerless lillies..I can grow lavander to which i love as long as it's kept at the bottom.I love the creeper which has been there ages apparently and the tree which is as tall as the house.I do have the front garden to start on next year it is a tiny plot about 13 ft x 6ft with a cherry tree at one end
