wjat a place to live! i fantasised about living in a converted windmill when I was much younger - the roof being converted to an observatory. sigh.

Thank you Carole and Fran ...
a pity the windmill's sails are gone, but nice that the building is still in place.

Some years ago I had friends who'd converted a very tall water tower, into their home .... with an amazingly high top room, having a 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside.

They had a snooker table up there .... would have suited you, Fran, for your observatory .. but I don't really cope well with heights !

Hi Pam ...
Thanks. This area gets sun all day, so the mahonias flower quite early.

A rather neglected frontage in the China House across our road has a lovely Mahonia display this year. Semi neglect sometimes is a benefit. Their gardener's van was there recently to sort the back garden. Originally owned by an older Chinese couple. They are passed on, but their extended family use it for visits, and stay place for waiters for their Chinese Restraunt. Our Mahonia in the back garden is fab this year too.

Great view.

Thanks Jbardet ... it is interesting to see the sites chosen for various windmills ... in history the builders obviously had reasons for selecting certain pieces of land .. such as windy places !

Saw one on the Broads, years ago; one floor had been glassed all round to make a sunny balcony all round. Must have given great views but did look a bit odd. Glad this one's kept its main character, even with no sails

Read somewhere ages ago that the sails could be set to send messages in the days before semaphore; can't find anything on Google, though; it'd be intresting to find out what sort of signals they needed.
