You don't want to get to close to it then Junna , Phew !!

It is such an interesting shape Junna.......more like fungi than a flower. I suppose the smell is to prevent it being eaten by something or maybe to attract flies. Does it smell like rotten meat?

Just had a look online. It is the largest individual flower on earth. It is known as the 'corpse flower' as it smells of decaying flesh. It lives as a parasite with no leaves, stems or roots, but has thread like strands embedded into its host. WHAT A GREAT FLOWER!

I have just googled "Why does Rafflesia smell bad". It's nickname is 'corpse flower' and smells like rotting carrion** to attract flies, as per Linda's suggestion. Despite it's bad smell it is one of Indonesia's three national flowers and is a 'protected species'. They can grow up to three feet in diameter ... now would smell rotten!

** Carrion is decaying animal flesh.

Apologies Linda, our comments must have crossed ....lol

Hello Junna, I have just looked at a map of the Philippines. I see you live in the north west, near Lingayen Gulf. Do you go to the Aurora National Memorial Park, it doesn't look that far away? The coast line north of you, seems to be populated, having roads and towns but the east coast looks relatively undeveloped.

Hello Alanb, You are right, we live near the sea,(Lingayen Gulf) 5 minutes of walk from our grandparent's house , and I have so many memories in Lingayen, I remember when i was i child , every Saturdays and Sundays almost in the beach swimming and fishing ,cannot imagine how i look then, lol!

As i remembered during in the 80's people in Lingayen are very few, we almost know each other, but in 1990's it started to multiply into 100's,
I only visited Lingayen once a year to visit my father's property...

Yes, most of the east town are still undevelop...
i always have a walk in the Capitol building of Lingayen near Urduja Hotel...

Hello Junna, I see the Urduja Hotel had a major refurbisment in 2008, it certainly has made a difference.

It's great to be able to think back to your childhood, fishing and swimming ...... "the good old days". <]:-))

Ohh, i miss that,You really know the story, lol, I do not know about the Reconstruction of Princess Urduja Hotel , What I know is that it was abandoned for so long :-(
Surely,it was renewed, I was not able to visit Lingayen for almost 2 decades, b'coz of my studies and job in Manila..

Yea, great old days !
