My favorite of all birds. I have lots in my yard...and I think they're going to start nesting, already. Just when I want to cut back some of my trees and plants. Last year I cut a branch off my Ficus craterastoma and I accidentally cut down a hummingbird's nest with two eggs. I felt so absolutely horrible! :>((

Hummbirds love to nest in Ficus trees (any evergreen species) and in my Southern Magnolia, tropical guava, and my nieghbor's giant bottlebrush tree, which is one of their food sources in winter.

We get the Anna's hummingbird and the Ruby Throated hummer also. Do they venture to Vancouver in summer? I think I read one of them is more of a commuter-lol,then the other species.

Hi Stan, we have mainly Anna's and Rufous on Vancouver Island. My neighbours are feeding them and they stay all winter. We have 8 feeders up there and filling them daily. So...we have tons of them there.
Here we have only 3 feeders and there is a constant battle over them. They are protecting them fearlessly. :-)

It's amazing how fearlessly these birds will protect their food sources.
