A pair of them were picking off twigs for nesting material .

Think that is a Carrion Crow as we have a pair round here building a nest. Magpies have a tinge of greeny blue in their long tail feathers and have patches of white on their bodies.

lol Amy..I thought I was seeing things,as it read Magpies, the first time I saw your pic this morning :o)..and sorry, but I have some sad news...your Gourd has met a nasty end..I noticed this morning ,it had gone mouldy, all of a sudden,as it was fine at the weekend..I think it could have been the sudden change in temperatures in the Consrvatory,as it got very hot one day,but really cold at night..it must prefer the cold,as it's been there since you gave it to me in November At least it lasted longer than it would have ,with the clear varnish painted on..Ah well,RIP,I'm sorry to lose it..:o( x

Mine as fresh as Daisy Sandra!, I will just have to remember to move it on Sunday when Robin comes lol

I didn't think to move it from the Conservatory,Carole,as we get the sun in there most of the day,and it was like a Greenhouse on Sunday..I'm sure that must have been the cause..after all,it still has flesh inside, and the varnish might have accelerated it..such a shame..ah well,it was nice while it lasted ..

Snap Amy they are doing the same here on the Silver Birch....

Never mind Sandra its had a good innings ,Mine is still fresh like Caroles , you shouldn't have used Nail varnish Lol .... I'll grow some more this year ! I think I've missed something ,what is this about Robin and the Gourd , did he try to eat it ?
Angela there are so many twigs on the ground I wondered why they didn't just come down to pick them up !

Lol,Amy..the girl in the nail shop wondered why I wanted it painting..she suggested the clear varnish..I wanted purple, with pink spots ! :o)

The reason why they're taking twigs from the tree, Amy is because they are 'green' and will bend easily, whereas those on the ground will be dead and dry so break easily.

Bloomer, you get worse lol!

Good pic Amy. The birds are all going crazy here, love spring.

Amy every time he comes he tries to take it home with him [think he would try to eat if given the chance lol].

Magpies are of the crow family Amy so you were right in one respect. He is a beauty thought isn't he.

We had magpies nest in our horse chestnut last year and looks like they're taking a interest in it again , robins fighting too such vicious little things.
25 Mar, 2015
Thanks for that Linda , they do keep going back to there original nesting place don't they Kathy , I thought the crow families built their nests in trees but this pair are building in a distant chimney pot ....
25 Mar, 2015
It was me Snoopdog I called it a Magpie but was corrected and told it was Carrion Crow so therefore changed the Title of it ...
26 Mar, 2015
lovely photo, how close were you? sounds like they're planning to move in to the neighbourhood
29 Mar, 2015
About 20ft on ground level Fran probably about the same in tree height ,they are making a nest in a nearby chimney pot ....

look forward to updates as they settle in. you must have a good camera, at least the ability to get a non-fuzzed photo!

They are very interesting birds. Today I have listened to radio and it says, according to research, they are able to prepare "devilish intelligent chicane plan" by which they expell even larger birds of prey (e.g. falcons, etc.) from the area, in which they operate.

I quite believe that Kat I have another photo showing them fighting mid-air guarding the chimney pot they are nesting in ...
