I have these. They are not quite flowering yet, but I protected them with short canes and string on Friday so they have survived the winds...so far. I do love the colour of them. No, I 'd never heard if their common name either!

I have just looked it up and the correct name is Gladiolus Comunis but on Scilly everyone calls them Whistling Jacks!!
