Loads of Scent ...Narcissus Paper White.

Loads of Scent ...Narcissus Paper White.

The dining room is full of beautiful scent from these tiny blooms. The bulbs in a pot were a gift to Julie back in November. They shot up and flowered very quickly. They are a bit tall as grew so quickly in the front room which was a bit too warm so I moved them to the dining room and supported them They certainly bring some brightness and cheer at this miserable time for us!

Looks great Paul we sure do need something to cheer us up. Well done.

I bet they smell wonderful, Paul.

6 Jan, 2016

Yes, I was just thinking, you can imagine you can smell them!

6 Jan, 2016

Yeah, and don't forget when you've enjoyed then, you can plant them in the garden. ☺

They are so lovely and do bring springtime into our homes. Ours are in the porch and have grown very tall but their scent makes up for their rather straggly appearance!

they are pretty ones... mine in the garden are up and at it...at this rate they will be over before St Davids day!

Lovely Paul. Nice scent makes up for lack of sunshine.

Lovely idea to plant them up indoors - wish I had thought of it.

How lovely and a beautiful scent to ..

Thanks everyone....they are lovely. From where I'm sitting in the dining room, I can smell them.they were a lovely gift from our eldest son's partner. They were in a hessian sack with a pot and a small bag of compost.they grew and flowered in no time!
I am going to make a couple small beds in the front(not big enough to call it a garden)....just a small area which is covered in slate chip at the moment but I will be clearing it all as there is no membrane under the slate so we are constantly weeding the area. I plan to relay some of the slate with membrane underneath and dig two beds to incorporate some of my plants I brought cuttings of from the old garden and I shall plant these near the path/front door. Not venturing out at the moment as our garden is underwater at the back. Also, not much time recently. Mum passed away in hospital on New Years Day. It was expected as she'd been deteriorating ever since she went into hospital after a fall and broke her hip(she was in there for 5 weeks and a day altogether) She was very weak and just slipped away in the end. Sad but, at 87 and weakening fast, as well as dementia, she had no quality. But, now lots to do when we are finally allowed to arrange funeral etc.

I hope your garden drains soon Paul. Sorry to hear about your mum.

Thanks Linda.....still very soggy this morning!

8 Jan, 2016

Gerry dug our parsnips out and we are going to freeze them as they aren't keeping in the wet soil, also the leeks are going rotten.

8 Jan, 2016

I'm not surprised .....my garden is soggy. I only have my overwintering onions in as started late last year so didn't grow any long term crops. I wonder if the onions will rot.

Sorry to hear about your Mum Paul. i wish you well for the next few weeks - not pleasant task but the last thing you can do for her.

Your poor garden has to put up with lots of water one way and another - Hope everything survives well. Maybe you will end up with cold onion soup out there!

Thanks Stera,
Ha ha.....yeah, I think the onions may be a disaster but we'll see. I have realised that I'm going to have to change a lot of my planting. Many of my grasses have died and others are struggling so I have started to research bog/ marginal plants for one side of the garden.I planted some which I knew would survive the damp and part shade but the wet is a lot worse than I'd imagined.
Some plants can be saved and moved but some already lost!
The veg patch is in full sun and I also made slightly raised beds and imported tops soil/compost/manure so I'm hoping the veg will do ok. I only grew a few carrots last year and planted the onion sets in Autumn.
Regards the other source of moisture in our garden....I did tell the lady next door how our plants were rotting and dying that side(next to her garden) due to being too wet but didn't mention her sprinkler....just hope they may have got the hint but, if not, I'll have to say something. but, earlier this week, the borders were holding pools of water due to all the rain without the sprinkler!!!

So sorry, Paul, I hope the last gesture won't be too hard for you & Frank. Not nice but as Stera says it is the last thing.

Yesterday morning we had a couple inches of water all around our cottage & the greenhouse was flooded, our neighbour had a lake instead of a lawn & had to block their air vents up ....all this totally surprising as we are on the side of a hill.
Let's hope we don't lose too many plants due to all this water.

9 Jan, 2016

Goodness GF, you don't expect that on a hill! The poor ground just can't absorb any more. Do you remember its not too long since a drought when the pundits said the water table would never recover? LOL.
Paul I bet you end up making raised beds all round...

9 Jan, 2016

Exactly, Stera, sodden ground is the problem & it's not a time of year when plants take up water either. Yes, I do remember them saying that, we always seem to get either too much or not enough!
Raised beds for Paul, sound like a great idea or maybe ponds ... poor Paul, you've been battling against too much wetness since last summer!

10 Jan, 2016

Ive already started looking into marginal/bog plants for this side of the garden(the other side is ok and it is noticeable how much more established the bed is on that other side!)
Been researching online and also had a word with a very helpful chap in a huge local nursery/garden centre today.

10 Jan, 2016

Careful Paul - next thing may be a drought....

10 Jan, 2016

Well, yes, but with my next door neighbours' sprinkler, I don't think we'll ever have a drought here!!

10 Jan, 2016

........as if gardeners didn't have enough to contend with, what's the chances of having sprinkler mad neighbours!

11 Jan, 2016

I know, but at least they'll keep my marginals moist but all the water is rotting the gravel boards!!!!

11 Jan, 2016

What silly people! Does their sprinkler reach both sides of their garden, I was wondering if their other neighbour is getting the same wetting as you.

12 Jan, 2016

Well, there is definitely a slope there because it does fill up (to a lesser degree) when we have torrential rain...so, the slope is coming into play as we get flooded in two spots mainly so whether it's effecting the other neighbour's, I doubt. But, it wouldn't be a problem if they had it on for a n hour or two but a few times last summer they left it on overnight. They move it about a little I think.
