Think my garden would fit into your pond.

Thanks Cariad, Karen, Sheila, Homebird.
DD, I would love a little rowing boat and of course the fizz.
Siris, lol, this is just a section of the pond, its about 60 metres x 30 metres.

That is not a pond, it's a lake!

Are there lots of fish Dawn?

7 Jun, 2016

It's not too deep Siris so I call it a pond. Karen, there are about 100, friends and neighbours dump them in when surplus to requirements, we bought 50 mirror carp about five years ago and I've never seen one since lol.

I thing Alan T had a similar experience. Im sure I read he bought posh fish which disappeared, then a shoal of roach appeared from nowhere. I find it fascinating the way fish find ponds. They must get carried by birds as eggs or something. But it would be great to know!

They do say birds carry eggs on their feet, I dont think we've had any but then again the heron seems to get them all :-(

Fantastico!. Amazingly beautiful and the water is clear. Is it a natural pond?

Love your pond, Dawn. I used to have one about a quarter of the size of yours with a bog garden at the shallow end. Many happy days spent in my waders!
I had quite a few fish too until an otter came one day.

Hi Stan, thank you. Yes, its natural, it gets fed from the brook and then the water goes back out via an open ditch, its clay lined.

Hi GF, wow, you had a bog garden too, must have been wonderful. Otter!! Oh no, I moan about the herons, oh dear, they look cute but I'm sure an otter could empty a pond very quickly. This is a section of the pond, there are 3 other parts, lol.

It had a small waterfall (homemade from old slabs & rocks)
& the splish splash kept the bog garden bit moist. Gorgeous iris called Perry's Blue & many candelabra primulas. Quite a lot of fish too. Saw a kingfisher a couple of times.
I blamed the dogs at first as the grasses were flattened in places, one of my springers used to roll her ball deliberately down the bank to have an excuse to get wet, but then I saw the fish bodies lying around & the otter tracks in the muddy edges. The otter had just bitten all the heads off!
I dread to think what damage will be caused by their re-introduction to waterways.

Oh dear GF thats a disaster.....

14 Jun, 2016

It was very upsetting as there had been a lot of fish that I had been thinking of offering some to friends.

Racoons and Herons did in my fish..twice. I had show quality Shubunkins, then Herons got every one in just a few days.
Another try with just a few butterfly Koi ended when Racoons -otter like- ate just the heads of the fish.

I had well over 30 years of no wildlife until some old cottages were torn down next door. That left a lane for them to get to my house. And gophers also showed up with no bone dry ground, and people footsteps between me and them.

There's something causing the water to ripple in the center Dawn ,do you still have Snakes in there ..Yikes !

15 Jun, 2016

Oh dear GF, you dont imagine otters entering gardens, do you, sad for you and the fish.
Stan, looks like the wildlife have taken their toll on you too.
Amy, the snakes are still around, saw one the other day but they only like it warm and sunny so they dont swim across the pond very often.

My garden was bordered by a stream, I guess that's how the otter came along & found my pond, but why just bite the heads off - just the same as happened with Stans' fish & the racoon?

Dawn, I don't fancy paddling in your pool any more, lol.

Looking absolutely gorgeous Dawn....I can see Mr Toad rowing round the bend any time soon....:))

18 Jun, 2016

Oh dear GF, blinkin Otter. You are welcome to paddle - but best to put your wellies on x

Hi Janey, thank you, haha, I will look out for Mr Toad.
