I thought I'd lost two of the Amistads that I left in the garden last winter, but no, both have been flowering really well..

They're very special aren't they Linda and so easy to take cuttings. I usually root them in water and pop them on the windowsill.
Yes, it's good to keep using what we have now.

Beautiful specimen Janey π.

Thanks Shirley and Sheila, not fully hardy though Shirley. I did mulch them, then put a log in front of them both and it seemed to do the trick..:))

Janey, I have S. 'Black and Blue' in a medium size pot and over wintered it in the unheated greenhouse last year. I do think it appreciated the shelter. On the other hand, S. 'Hot Lips' loves being left out in a border!

Confusing isnβt it Shirley? It seems the shrubby Salvias are hardy, but the herbaceous ones only half-hardy β¦ i.e. it depends where they are planted! Worth saving though π.

Sheila, it doesn't take much to confuse me these days! I shall leave 'Hot Lips' until the last for cutting back as it's looking lovely at the moment.

Yes Shirley, as Sheila says, that must be the difference between the perennials and the herbaceous types. I'm going to look up all about them, and there are so.many of them!
I've quite a few S. Nemerosa, the shrubby ones, lovely navy blue S. Salvatore, cope with anything all year round. It is very confusing though isn't it..

Forgot to say β¦ thanks for the tip about taking cuttings in water - good idea!

Thanks Amy, lovely to see you. I moved the pot, only by swivelling it on it's base I hasten to add, it was hidden by nepeta right at the back of the border. Ian brought it home..:)
They do root so freely Sheila. x

Janey, I looked on my garden plants list and found Salvia nemorosa 'Ostfriesland' was planted here in June 2020. No sign of it at all now ... :o(

Janey, yes it's me again (!), I have just watched Thursday's edition of Gardener's World and so enjoyed the feature on Salvias. If you've not seen it yet, find it on catch-up, so interesting, especially when she said to mark where some Salvias are as they die down and could get mistaken for a weed and pulled up. That explains where mine went then!!

I must watch it Shirley, and to see little Ned too..:)
I bet that's what happened to your Salvia. They are underneath the soil all winter then unless you remember where it's planted, you wouldn't know it wasn't a weed.
I should give one another try. I bought plug plants from the Telegraph last year and grew them on to plant out this last spring. They've done fine, coped with the heat and will be lovely decent sized plants by next summer.

Isn't Ned a cute puppy? I like the idea of Salvias as plug plants ... may need to research that!

They're the shrubby types Shirley.
Yes Ned is a real cutie and steals some of the scenes..:))

Lovely salvias. I've just taken cuttings from my salvia (the same colour as yours) and they have taken well. I've planted them into plastic grape boxes (recycling.)
