Anthurium ‘Lazarz’

Anthurium ‘Lazarz’ (Anthurium ‘Lazarz’)

My Anthurium is flowering right now. This plant is generally grown for its very large leaves, but I think the flowers are very interesting. This Anthurium hybrid was developed here in San Diego, CA. This understory plant is tough as nails, tolerating a lot of neglect. I think it may be hardy to just above freezing, although I’m not positive because it very rarely gets down 40 degrees f (4.5 c) here. Photo taken Oct. 27, 2022.

We have anthuriums as houseplants here Delonix, usually the ones with the cream spathe and red outer edges, very pretty.

I used to have the red, pink and purple ones outside under my shade structure. For some reason they usually decline after 10 years then die. Someone told me they need to be cut and separated every 3 to 5 years to be rejuvenated.

How exotic to have them outside. I haven't seen the purple ones over here. Good piece of advice if you plant any more..

This is my old purple one. It died a few years back.

Klahanie,

They’re very tricky indoors. They love bright light and lots of humidity. This is why I always grow them outdoors in shade.

This Anthurium’Lazarz’ I purchased in summer of 2002, over 20 years ago. It’s been the easiest Anthurium I’ve ever grown.

Interesting info, Andy. I've never seen this gorgeous deep colour either. I guess they do much better outdoors in the right environment/climate.

Yes, outside in mostly shade. They do best in hot, humid weather.
