What no water only ice,
I've pecked at it not once but twice.

I keep taking out water but it soon freezes up, Meadowland.

I just pour very hot water into mine and the birds soon get a drink.

Thanks Rose and Paulmaria. The birdbath is made from stones we dug up when we had our smallholding.

I saw a Greenfinch and a Blackbird drinking from the bowl on the grass today ... it is raised off the ground on three house bricks with a tealight burning to keep the water from freezing.

Oh, I must try that idea, Shirley! I renew the water with boiling each morning and fill up the feeders etc. Takes a while. She's a pretty lady, Linda.

Hi Shirley and Ange, The birds need help this weather don't they. Good that you are both doing that. I've just been outside to put water out again as it's minus four and misty.

A Magpie this morning filled his beak with some old bread I had put out, then proceeded to dunk the lot in the water, grrr!!

It's a shame isn't it, poor things. We're fortunate that our pond water flows all the time and stops it from freezing.

Hi Shirley they always seem to do that, I suppose it helps them to digest it. You have to feel for the poor little birds in these temperatures Kate, I agree with you. Good that they have some flowing water in your garden.
It's over minus four now and I'm going out to defreeze the water, as long as I don't freeze myself in doing so....LOL!

At 10am today the water bowl was frozen and stuck to the 3 bricks it rests on ... :o((

Just been out to de-ice again and the Blackbird and Grey Wagtail were waiting.
