Lovely to see a photo of the whole plant,Hywel! How do you manage to get it to grow like that?

You must tell me how I can grow the plant you sent me a couple of years ago better as it's just clinging on to life.

That's just the way it grows Sue. I only water it.

I can't remember what plant I sent you, could you remind me please ...

You sent me a Mistletoe cactus (Rhipsalis pilocarpa).

Sorry I called you by the wrong name Balcony, I was thinking of someone else at the same time.
The plant needs free draining compost and more water than desert cacti, don't let it dry out too much. Having said that I sometimes forget to water mine !
I've planted it in ordinary compost with a bit of added grit.
It needs plenty of light but not direct summer sunshine, and it likes a warm temperature. Mine is in a greenhouse for the summer, (the side that doesn't get too much sun) but I bring it indoors for the coldest months.

Thanks for that info, Hywel. So far it has managed to survive 18 months in my hands but somehow it never looks very happy. Back in April I repotted all the plants & cutting in Cactus & Succulent compost. A few weeks ago I moved them all outside on to the balcony & left them on top of the Bird of Paradise pot exactly how they were in the kitchen. The only thing I can say at present is that it looks like they are all still alive. 👍

Rhipsalis do not want the same treatment as desert cacti. They are not drought resistant and should not be planted in cactus compost because that is designed for desert cacti.
If you're using cactus compost you should add some multipurpose compost to it.
Also I would not put it on your west facing balcony, it doesn't like direct afternoon sunshine in the summer.
Their natural habitat is tropical forests where they get bright but indirect light and plenty of moisture.

Thanks, Hywel for that info! I'll bring them back inside tomorrow when I finished planting out my tomatoes in the growbags. I have to reorganise the balcony again now anyway.
