That looks precarious! Thanks for showing.

Yes, amazing to have built them on what looks like vertical rock!

Nothing precarious about them! Even in their ruined state there was never any danger of them falling down into the river at the bottom of the valley!
I've been in the museum a couple of times as well as the bar - not the restaurant though - too expensive for my pocket!
They've had major restoration works done to them of at least 2 occasions I know of.
The views from the balconies are some of the very best you could ever ask for! At night they are lit up & look really spectacular!

As only the wooden balconies actually project out over the ravine there is no danger of anything falling down. They have been there several hundred years & there are more rigorous inspections nowadays than there ever were in the past.
All the timbers are in excellent condition & the majority of the houses are in the interior of the rock. I've been in them on various occasions, even out on the balconies.

Amazing to see! What an incredible piece of history Balc. I can't see that they'd be winter gardening any time soon..:))

The Hanging Houses over the River Húecar valley in Cuenca are the symbol for Cuenca. They were once the Royal Palace for the kings of Spain! Then they fell into disrepair & were restored in 1960s I think. Just a year or two ago they went through a mayor restoration. They house an Abstract Arts Museum & a bar + restaurant. They are a couple of hundred feet over the valley floor where the River Húecar flows.
Behind them you can just see a tiny bit of the Cathedral of Cuenca.
