David with Sunflower on allotment 11th August 2010

I won 1st prize for this sunflower that was the tallest on the allotments field - by 1/2 inch! I got a bottle of Rose wine!

Thanks, Wylie! But I can't really take much credit for the height that it reached as it just happened to grow on the edge of the tomato bed where I had lots of plants that were watered & fed quite frequently. So it benefitted from the water & tomato feed as well as the tomatoes themselves!

I didn't know at that time that all the sunflowers on the allotments field would be entered into the competition - you didn't have to enter them yourself!

I don't know what the lady who got 2nd prize did to get hers to grow so tall, I don't know either if it was multiheaded like ours either. I don't know why I didn't talk to her about our sunflowers as she was a very friendly lady & I spent a lot of time talking to her during the years I was on the allotments field with my friend Gerry & later when I got my own half plot.

Thanks, Lindak. I liked them very much & we grew 100s of them one year! Gerry brought seeds of several dwarf varieties which didn't get much above knee high! 🤣 Seeds were always growing the next year so we never lacked for Sunflowers on his allotment! 🤣

Thanks, Andy! I did like the Sunflowers we used to grow on the allotment. They were a great favourite with the bees & there was a constant buzzing all the time they were in flower! Gerry saved seeds for the wild birds that he used to feed in his garden.
