Holy Island Lindisfarne

Holy Island Lindisfarne

We went to northumberland for our hols and visited Holy Island, which I found to be one of the most awesome and atmospheric places I have ever seen, this picture was of the ruined monastery and castle in the background taken on a misty day which only made the whole island more magical.

One of my favourite places, Pansypotter. There are many lovely gardens to see here, too, despite the exposed, salty conditions.

Hi David ,We didnt get chance to view any gardens as we had to leave due to the tide! but i do believe that their is a walled garden round the castle which was designed by Gertrude Jekyll? On our next visit we will make sure that we time the tides better so we can have a good look around.

yes, you can check up on the tide times online b4 you go (can't remember the site but have posted it b4, for Jacque. try looking via the search box at top of the page for it. The best garden I know is around the abbey. many of the private gardens are really lovely to peer into.

Before the present Causeway was laid down access was across the sand, which made for a much more exciting journey! The safest route was marked by high posts with refuges on top in case you got caught by the tide. Lots of people tried to take a short cut and got caught in the softer sand. A local farmer had a sideline in towing them out with his tractor.
On one occasion even the tractor got stuck and fortunately my father in law was in the area repairing a huge Steam Roller for the local council. By the time he had a head of steam both the car and tractor were well awash!
Despite it's huge weight the large footprint enabled them to back the Steam Roller on to the soft sand and to pull both the tractor and the car right out to safety in one fell swoop!
I think that even now occasionally the local lifeboat from Seahouses has to rescue those who are a bit tardy in leaving!

And, Arlene, there's every reason to forget the time in this wonderful place. Let me know when you're coming, Jacque. Are you visiting the Borders region again, or venturing farther north?

So glad GOY members enjoy Northumberland, I loved my little touring holiday there. I was there during a local election, I kept bumping into Kennedy of the Liberal Party and Batman of the Justice for Father's.

My sister said that recently they had a helicopter out on a rescue-hate to think how deep that must have been-scary!

Theres always someone willing to to flaunt rules they dont seem to care what risk and costs to others when their foolishness goes wrong!
