These Coleus plants have been in the ground almost 3 years. Generally, after 3 years they need to be removed because they get too woody and the bugs attack the stems...I just start new cuttings.
Pic taken today.

Terratoonie, Ualda:
Thanks for the comments. I just took these plants out last week...and I'm starting new cuttings. The stems were so woody that the termites were eating them...that's when it time to remove them. They were almost 4 years old.

Thank you for the comment!
I took these out just a few months ago...the termites were eating the woody stems. They were over 3 years old -- their usual life span here
in San Diego, CA.

It's nice to have Coleus in the garden all year around Delonix1, I grew my first Coleus from seeds this year, I am keeping it in a pot so I will bring it indoor in the cold months.

Ualda:
Yes, they are good filler plants...and grow all year here...however, they do need to be cut back in Spring. These plants have all been taken out a couple of months ago. I only have one plant now to take cutting from.
They do well as a house plants as long as the flowers are cut off.

Nice looking plant

Thanks! I had several in this area. I haven't planted any in a while, though. The severe drought over the last several years has stopped me from planting them. They love a lot of water, which I can't give them.

Has the drought improved? Are you now getting rain?
31 Aug, 2018
No, it will never improve during summer. It's in the extreme category for most of California. We don't receive any rain from most of April through most of November, many times no rain at all in November (which is statically the sunniest month in San Diego).

Our official low for the season so far has been 34f. But my backyard had to have been warmer. The roof of the studio was frost free where the other roof of the rental 2 bedroom had ice on it being open to the sky. My backyard has the big podocarpus trees and the palms. Coleus and Abutilons were on my mind for some color next summer.

34 degrees is cold, but not too bad considering it’s not freezing. My coldest morning low has been 40 degrees, which is really cold for here. Lately, it’s been in the 50’s, though.
Abutilons love the SF Bay Area! Of course, Coleus for an annual. Although, I used to grow the small-leaf orange variety outside all year. It was very hardy.
I read and heard on the news most of the SF Bay Area could receive 6 to 8 plus inches of rain over the next 3 or 4 days. That’s very good news for the drought.

Coming from Hawaii for lows in the 50's,then a mix with Alaskan air after that. Already its soaking wet...mosses on my paving stones are a lush green again. So are the hills down the street.
Happy New Year Andy.

Wow! It’s going to look like Ireland. Lol
I hope it greens up here, too. It’s been 3 years (2019) since it’s been green here.
Stan, have a terrific New Year! 😎

Interesting how you start new plants.
I have 'woody' examples of other shrubs where I should really start new young ones from cuttings.
