Hands up!! (Tilia platyphyllos (Big Leaf Linden) Tilia Cordata)

The gardener at Normanby says they are Pleached Limes. Pleaching is a form of training and the species of Limes here are Tilia platyphyllos and Tilia cordata.

Ha..ha.....they do look better fully clothed in Summer!

They remind me of the joshua tree in the southwest US. Must be pruned to form a break. Really freaky in winter....lol. Like undersea anemone or coral.

Not sure what they are Dawnsaunt...but there is about 8 of them, yes to form a break like Gt says.....they are very old...I would say a couple of hundred years....and behind is the deer park with a walk to the lake. I will email the gardener there to find out!

These poor trees look tortured...not sure...bout this...makes me wonder ....WHY? ...someone get bored or what?

8 Jan, 2009

Yes they do Cj.......my Mum hates anything like this and Bonsai trees. I think maybe when they were planted these large estates were copying French formal gardens and new ideas, like topiary...I love it but it's not the natural form of the shrub...I suppose it's a form of domestication in the garden.

Speaking of imaginations TT, this reminds me of the Fangorn Forrest and the walking talking tree-shepard in the movie 'Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers..... I love this photo !

Wow that's cool! I've not seen trees trained like that before.

I'll take a pic of them in Spring Rydeboyz and see what they're like with leaves.

...they'll look like cheer-leaders with big pom-poms! :-)

They will be saying Help!!!!...Help!!!..I have been tortured...don't let them do it to anyone else!!!...waving their poor totured limbs like cripples..

Oh... you are still lovely...Pleached Limes....Your beauty may have been magnified by this plunder...but I do have to wonder what you looked like before?

Very beautiful trees Cj with heavily scented blossoms.......in Victorian times the large houses would have avenues of Limes for the carriages to drive up.

30 Jan, 2009

Sounds wonderful Janey..are there photos? I wonder on line?...of them in their natural state......I think I will have to have a look round...thank you for telling me of their history...it sounds so beautiful...
