pumpkin from Summer

pumpkin from Summer (Cucurbita pepo (Courgette))

Brought in when the plant frosted. It has slowly been coloring up and now looks perfect for the season. Though no jack-o-lantern, this'll be pie!

Wow that's a good sized pumpkin. I don't blame you at all for devoting it to pie. Was it difficult to grow?

It did alright. I removed all others to help this one get everything (I learned that in elementary school of all places). It was in a whiskey barrel so it was warmer than in the ground. I planted as a cosmetic plant and didn't expect this at all. called sugar something, can't find the tag. Should be tasty.

Wow, yummy, I love pumpkims, I get sad this time of year, when I see so much of it wasted on halloween, indeed, it is food to me.

Lovely size there Greenthumb and a real good tip too about only growing one per plant although I don't think I could control myself to do the same thing.

I must be a meanie I love carving pumpkins up although I'm really looking forward to growing my own next year so maybe then I'll get to taste one!Hel.xxx.

This variety is for food, sweeter and smoother than the big dry ones used for jack o lanterns. The pumpkin for holiday industry is a little disturbing, I agree. Though the idea has long tradiition and is fun. I'm going for Jack-o type next year, the plant of this one was more a bush and didn't spread like I was wanting.

Lovely specimen there Greenthumb.I tried growing a monster one last year of the variety Hundredweight but I only managed 50+lb.Yours is a lovely colour and I do hope you enjoy eating it

Congratulations! that is a VERY laudable effort. Wow.... with the length of your growing season ...and most pumpkins need at least 60 days...you did extremely well. You will have a very delicious pie! Manga! Tina2: I grew the giants but had a wet summer didn't get anything approaching 500 lbs...but did manage one so large I couldn't move it...it was fertilizer!! I had to leave it where it was... we moved to the Northland in August so missed the end times... and didn't get any seeds to continue with...but they would not have developed much up north.

I was amazed myself Lori. Half the new pumpkins removed themselves, and I wasn't sure this one would color up when I took out the plant in august! I might put out a few next season. Big foliage for up here, and I may get a veg or two again!

Call me silly if you like i have never cooked pumkin, but could you not use it for both? take out the middle for your pie and use the outer for a lantern - it is such a great shape for one! lol

I could, but the cooked pumkin is the flesh inside the skin not the innards, I'm debating shaving it thin to the skin and having a jack-o that lasts maybe a day. That'd be alright with me. With our deep freeze, they usuually melt in a day anyway. :-)

Exactly what i was thinking here Greenthumb, cut the base... taked the internal soft part to the pumpkin pie and save the Jack-o... set a candle inside and take a picture!!!
Thi skin color is wayy to good for jack-o!

I'm with Adoons...just experienced pumpkin/squash soup...and the ginger sounds even more delicious! I had mine with just a sprinkle of grated nutmeg on top. Good eating!
