After a day or so the open flowers drop down to their blooming position, making space for the others to start to open.

Thanks all!
As you may have guessed, I'm rather smitten!
Crissue - the leaves are rather large. Up to 50cm big in fact!
9 Aug, 2011
wow, 50cm
9 Aug, 2011
so the flower is about 20cm??

Sorry - you know already that I'm not a batflower fan. It is a fantastic plant, I agree, but I couldn't exactly describe it as 'pretty'. LOL. Maybe if it was purple? :-D

Do they have purple bats spritz?? Or are they called fruit bats?!
9 Aug, 2011
Even I couldn't call it beautiful, but it is fascinating! Everyone who sees it either says WOW or bursts out laughing!!!
This is next on the list..................

i cant make the link work meanie?? do you google 'the most out of this world specimen plants' to find the ones you want??
9 Aug, 2011
Try it now!
I found this just by typing "Tacca" into google instead of "Tacca chanterieri".

Very nice Meanie! The photo I took was of one in an conservatory in San Francisco. How exciting to have one of your very own!!! Is yours in a conservatory as well? They're tropical, aren't they?

Hi Meanie, just had a look at the Tacca on line, quite a Plant...What type of compost/growing criteria do you follow to get your successful bloom...just asking, I'm not going to grow, I'll watch yours :o))))
10 Aug, 2011
ah yes i have got it now! its a beautiful ~ im using googlechrome and this time went straight to the page as soon as i highlighted it ~ nice and easy.
i think its the best yet!!

Tasty - yes mine is in the conservatory, as it likes heat, humidity and shade. Reputed to take a degree or two of frost.
Crissue - conditions as above. Compost wise, it needs to retain moisture yet be free draining, so it's a mix of ordinary potting compost mixed with orchid compost and a little grit. It's in a 30cm pot. Regular misting with care to ensure that the leaf axils fill up with water (that is supposed to encourage blooming).
Sticki - it was my fault. I found that through one of these sights that takes the google search request in and redirects you. So the original link could not work as google was not sending out a search request.

wow that would make a formidable plant if you get one Meanie...
10 Aug, 2011
Thanks for that....:o))
10 Aug, 2011
Wouldn't it just!
10 Aug, 2011
don't worry ~ got there in the end thanks
10 Aug, 2011

10 Aug, 2011
It's continuing to get darker Yorkshire!
10 Aug, 2011
you'll have to put another picture on Meanie
11 Aug, 2011
The giant one DOES have purple in it! I might even have a grudging 'like' for that one, Meanie! LOL.
11 Aug, 2011
I'll do another later Yorkshire.....
It'll involve a shopping session in the US at the moment Spritz!
11 Aug, 2011
That wont be too much of a hardship will it meanie?
11 Aug, 2011
I wouldn't fancy it's chances mail order Sticki. They're only small plants as well. Now if I could find someone growing it with fresh seed.........
