Cotinus Smokebush

My thanks to all you lovely people who helped solve the mystery of Elaine’s “Flame Tree”.
She now knows it is a Cotinus “Smokebush”. Bamboo has really got my inquisitiveness running, now, by suggesting that it might be a Royal Purple. I have searched on the web and from a distance it certainly looks like it but in close-up mine does not seem to have such deep purple leaves. Other photos suggest the possibility that it may be Velvet Cloak.

I originally bought one of these about 20 years ago - at that time, the only purple leaved cultivar available was Royal Purple, but I know that since then, many other cultivars have been bred. As this one is so large, though, I reckon it's got to be Royal Purple. They do differ from plant to plant anyway - mine always developed what I can only describe as bright red blanket stitch round the edge of the leaves in autumn, yet the one I planted elsewhere didn't do that, but it did go much redder generally in the autumn than mine ever did. It is my favourite large shrub, I love it.

For comparison 'Grace has much larger leaves and is more vigorous than Royal Purple' or 'Velvet Cloak'.

Thanks Bluespruce. I am now convinced it is Royal Purple. All Bamboo's observations fell into place.

I have the Royal Purple though I only planted it this year. I can`t wait for it to grow into a beautiful big shrub.
