Toms can grow to around 7 feet or so but you wouldn't get much fruit before frost got them. I tend to nip the tops out at around the 4' 6" to 5' size, not sure what that is in modern?

It also depends on whether the plant is a vine or bush, bush varieties need to be left, vine need sideshoots pinching out to keep the single growing upright stem

it depends on the variety. Im currently growing cherry tomatoes and most of them are about 3ft high and about 2 ft wide!!
I didnt quite pinch out where I was supposed to now I have to hold the branches up with string!!
