My daughter got some hyacinth bulbs for her birthday along with compost and posh pot. Now i know begger all about bulbs but she thinks its great putting them to bed and tucking them in(the compost0 anyway my question is:

are they indoor flowers, Ive seen them out but she was given indoor plant compost.
What does " prepared" bulbs mean
how many to a pot about30cms wide
my mother said they have to go in the shed to start them off!!

Hi Mookins there are both indoor and outdoor hyacinths. The 'prepared' bulbs are specially treated to flower early and are for indoors after they have flowered and the leaves have died down they can be planted in the garden to grow as normal.

I've actually stopped growing them now but when I did packed then in to the container a tightly as possible. Plant them so that their nose is barely covered.

Put somewhere cool and dark until they start to grow.

Hope your daughter has fun with them

Actually by the back door will have done them no harm. They need a period of cold to begin root formation, so as long as the shed is not a hot place it will be ideal.

I would forget I'd done mine and find them much later when they had grown far more than they should in the dark... always survived though

And when they've finished early next year, you can plant them outside in the garden and they'll grow again. Warning about treated bulbs in particular - the stuff they treat them with causes skin irritation, so handle with care (preferably with gloves, in my case anyway)

How do I say thanks?
