Have you been encouraging the wildlife Pete? Maybe feeding the birds has paid off in less slugs.......

1 Jul, 2013

i base my garden on wildlife pam especially birds ,i love to watch them , but its not the birds i think maybe a combination of the long wet cold winter reduced the numbers ,i think for 2 years running my blackbirds have broken all records ,i planted russian vine so they could hide the nests from thieveing magpies (grr i hate them ) & they hatched 3 broods last year ,probably do the same this , at one stage i had 17 adult blackbirds feeding in the garden ,marvellous , ( the magpies kill an awefull lot of chicks ) cheers

Looks like we could be winning this year..I have only found a few snails this year, and hardly any slugs..let's wait and see :o)

I've not had a lot of slugs and thought I hadn't seen many snails. However, the b******g snails have been better at hiding in my garden! Under rims of flower pots and in dark corners that I only come across if I'm working specifically in that area. Have found lots of eggs in my plant pots as I've been digging so have disposed of these. They've still managed to eat my dahlias!

Very few slugs or snails this year. Nice change.

1 Jul, 2013

That's because they have all moved here. We have had many many more than usual.

A distinct drop in numbers here too. I hope we all haven't jinxed it now!!!!

SBG - that sounds like the name of a 'B movie?

I am seriously worried very little in the way of insect or mollusc life in our garden. We usually have flies in the kitchen no matter what - barely seen a one. Guess it is all down to these new insecticides... and am seriously worried.

I haven't seen any greenfly this year either.none on any of the Roses at all ...

2 Jul, 2013

like i said vaccation for.... invertebrates. that covers every creepy crawly. we have your flies mg at least 20 every day and I must also have bloomers greenfly, even they've managed to get indoors on to the houseplants in the kitchen. I am sooooo fed up with the blessed things. I wouldnt care but I try to be as environmentally friendly as possible, even down to washing up by hand instead of using the dish washer.

very few greenfly here too ,but i certainly wont miss the slugs lol

Maybe they are on vacation,Sbg..hope they don't want to stay home next time!..sorry,you have so many though..we have lots of Ants,if that is any consolation :o)

2 Jul, 2013

None in my garden but do get ants.

But my roses are fabulous no black spot and full of buds ready burst open.

2 Jul, 2013

yes scotcat its my best ever year with my roses too ,infact everything is really lush sadly not much colour yet but that will soon change ,my garden backs onto fields & woods ,every year the grass has never been more than a few inches high ,now its amazeing lots of every kind of wild flower & the grass is over knee hight , i spend lots of time pulling up the himalayan balsam but thre grass is even covering that up to now ,its a funny season this time

2 Jul, 2013

Blimey. Am I the only one then! I was plagued by greenfly earlier in the season, I'm now plagued by black fly - well, not me personally of course! But they're on the apple trees, viburnums, clematis, cornus, blackcrrants and redcurrants. I just cannot keep on top of the blighters. Snails up the yin yang, slugs, rosemary beetle - squishing at least twelve every day. But I think I've got the lily beetle sorted! I've only seen one ladybird so far this year too. Yep, a couple of the roses have got black spot, and one rose and clematis have powdery mildew! But, on a better note, loads and loads of birds (Hmm. Why are they not feasting on the slugs and bugs I ask myself?) and bees and even a couple of butterflies.

Always look on the bright side...

oh we have 3 colonies in the greenhouse and 1 in the pond wall. :o(
never known it so bad as this year.

2 Jul, 2013

Plenty of greenfly and snails..not a single lady bird but 3 of their larvea and only 1 lily beetle. Masses of 'cuckoo spit ' on my lavender making it very weak, washed it off twice and squished loads of them yuk!!

interesting isn't it? Only 2 slugs here [ well, actually caught that is] but many snails! Lots of greenfly and blackfly and ants. Lots of bees too [we have lots of bee friendly plants.]No ladybirds at all so far. To do with the cold Spring maybe? Only a few flies lately as well [good.]
