I do this regularly but they dont always come true, ie not identical to their parent. but fun and inexpensive.

I collected my sweet pea seeds from my plants in the autumn and planted them up a few weeks ago, they are already 4" high and doing well. So can't see any reason why yours wouldn't either.
I plant mine individually in toilet roll tubes as they like to grow long roots and don't like to have them disturbed so you can plant them straight into the ground in the tubes when its time, the tube will just rot away.
