My hydrangeas haven't done well this year although one of them has suddenly decided to bloom. You could be cutting them back too hard. I feed my plants in September with ericacious feed.

why does this plant attract loads of flies this time of year »
I think most people have found their Hydrangeas have struggled this year....all mine have except one which has flowered normally, but the others just have a couple on. Bad weather at a crucial bud-forming stage I think !
Also be careful doing any cutting back or pruning as this can stop flowers forming. Maybe next year will be better !
