I wonder of anyone can help me identify the two plants on the right? I planted them recently because I thought they were the same as the poppy on the left! The leaves are quite prickly and there was a strong taproot. A weed or not? !!

invasive plants

Looks like a couple of young teasels. I grow these ornamentally in my jungle garden but they are very invasive. My first ones just appeared, presumably from an incontinent bird. They are like an enormous (7 to 10 foot) thistle and if you have that kind of garden they are great. However, because they are so invasive, if you can't keep them down when they appear, you will end up with hundreds of them. So if you don't want them at all, then get them while they are young. If you want to keep a few then keep the hoe handy from early winter through late spring. They can pop up at any time. If you have the wrong neighbours then again they are not recommended. They spread on the wind as well as by bird.

They'll flower next year, and the flower heads are very attractive, providing nectar for bees, and seeds later for goldfinches. Go on, be a devil and let 'em stay. Phil J

That is why I let some stay in my jungle garden Phil. You do have to keep on top of them after seed-head time though. Last year I was ill and missed thinning them. Had to attack them with loppers and a scythe later. Fortunately they are annuals, or maybe biennials, because the tap root is as tough as old boots. I also don't think they would look right in a formal bedded garden.
