Why is my Clematis Armandii developing brown leaves?

The plant is about 4 years old, is in a large 70x70x70cm terracotta pot with shaded roots, and was growing really well. Despite flowering this Spring, all the leaves are gradually turning brown, starting from the tip in towards the stem, so the plant is looking really poorly.
Any ideas as to what might be ailing it?
Thanks.

I know this may not be easy but can you look to see if the roots are penitrating the bottom of the container which would be a sign to give it a bigger home? the only other thing I can think of is that it has been effected by a chemical or parasite?!

Alternatively, the frost may have got it, the contents of the pot could have been frozen.
