Could i put salt around my sunflowers to stop slugs before i can get out to buy slug pellets? what do i do with the eaten leaves, pull them off? thank u :o(

No, don't put salt on the soil, its not good for plants, though it will deter slugs. Not much point though if the cure for slugs kills off your plants too...

How big are your Sunflowers Leighleigh, if they are not too big you might be able to put plastic collars made from old drink bottles to protect them. I did this but I put the collars on as i planted the seed and I took them of about three weeks ago, haven't had a problem with slugs as the leaves are to high and the stalk to rough for the slugs to nosh on. Hope this helps!

Ok thanks bamboo, no salt then.
Jenny-they are about 7inch at a guess, its all this rain! they were doing so well! Thats a great idea, do you mean a 2litre or like a small bottle half including the bit you drink from then the leaves coming out of the top? yeh i think that would work-with vaseline round it too? i read that in a book they dont like that. i have bark chip mulch round them too. :o)

Agree with jenny you could also get some copper tape to wrap around the plastic collars this willkeep them away.

Leigh. I found in my garden that the bark mulch was doubling up as a slug hotel. There were lots of the blighters hiding underneath! I don't know if others found this problem

Yes, the 2ltr bottles are best, just cut the top and bottom off and use the middle bit.

For a much cheaper versionof copper tape, go down the route of copper scourers................... unravel and either pull off sections to put round the base of your plants or snip off 1 -2" lengths and put over your plant and down round the base like a copper collar.
