Little fuchsia blog

I brought my fuchsia indoors a few days ago, the one that’s been outside that I have been training as a small standard. I did this as the weather has been quite cold and I thought that I’d be able to keep a closer eye on it.
I had forgotten all about it as it was in a different place and saw it today all drooped and sad, I thought I had lost it:-

So I watered it and within a couple of hours -here it is thank goodness -lol

It just goes to show that water is a special gift and we all depend on it!

Please forgive me my little beauty- I’ll make sure you’re not thirsty ever again!

it always ammazes me how some plants look to be total goners and then recover lazarus style. well done on its progress so far.

Having just got in to the whole 'gardening thing', I have been convinced that I have 'lost' plants, left right and centre.....and then....BAM! They come back better than before.

Ali keeps saying, 'they're a life form and anything living will fight to keep living!' Guess she's right.

Well done Richard....good save!

It always amazes me too how they perk up quite quickly after watering.

True Bobg - Thanks -its amazing what a little water can do (especially if its hot and has a tea bag in it :-) )

Lucky you, this is what mine looks like its going in the shed shortly as long as you keep them damp not to let dry out, they do not need light in winter time, I was given these instructions a few years ago by a gardener who was an expert on them he use to show his. told me with my other fuchsias place them all in a large pot, put 50% of peat with good compost and leave them in shed at 45% they will be ok and so far they have been.

Nice to see the fuchsia happy again... I did the same with a hydrangea the other day... the plant had become too dry, but it revived when given a good dose of rainwater. :o)

I have a cup of tea by the side of me as I am writing Mookins mmm lovely lol.
We have a hydrangea in the garden TT a friend bought it for us about eight years ago. I have taken a few cuttings of it this year and they have taken ok. I gave a cutting to the friend who gave it us and she was delighted -surprised we still had it.
Hi Morgana- I will need to keep my fuchsia's over winter in the same way as you, but I've not got any heating in the shed so will need to look out for frosts and bring them in I suppose when it gets too cold.

A tip for the stem of standard fuchsias - pipe insulation, the foam stuff for your central heating pipes opens out and pops round the stem easily.

Thank you Wagger for that information good idea, I will try it.

8 Sep, 2009

Thats a good idea Wagger I hadn't thought of using that, I'll have to get some ready for the winter I see that you will be using it also Morgana.
Yes I was lucky Sandra I watered it again today just to make sure and I put one of those 'water signals' in the pot which shows you when it is getting too dry -lol :-)

Richard, I've kept several standard Fuchsias on my balcony without any particular protection. They stand all winter on a table in the most sheltered corner of the balcony inside an enormous plastic bag. Even with this terrible winter we have had they are still alive! Other plants that I normally keep on the table have died, especially the Geraniums. The heads of the standards poke above the bag which is nearly a metre high. Both standards are exactly one metre high to where they start to form a head, this is so that they are above the balcony railings during the summer. If they didn't grow above the railings I wouldn't have room for them.
